jeezus!!!! MS has got it down cold, they are taking down as many mod-chip re-sellers as they can, AND buying out gameing companies! arh! whats next!?

note, this isn't 100% sure, but its definitly a big rumor going around now, and it might only be temporary, OBVIOUSLY with mod-chips no where to be seen when the website comes back up, if the legal proceedings go as MS wants it to.

OK, I can see how they would be cold for taking down Game companies, but Mod-Chips are really technically illegal no matter how you look at it. They may call them a grey area but lets face it, it is modifying a copyrighted machine to play illegaly copied games. Cmon how is that one considered "cold". They are merely forcing the laws to work, and protecting their gaming system. You can slam M$ all you want for screwing around, but slaming them for trying to protect their own interests? Thats just cold.

sadly, they are only going to court with it though, there are rumors that the "bios based" modchips, with no pre-loaded bios already on them might not get taken off the market, but i guess we will find out soon enough;)

and yea, i agree with you, it is illegal, but ya know, its just like napster, so the nab a big re-seller, doesn't mean it won't stop;) but you know that eagle, i'm not going to undermine your awareness about this;)

Damn, I was about to post this :p

Anyway... M$ will do anything to not lose money, even though they have so fucking much, they cant get enough. Imagine if a Working XBOX Emu Came out? How Would the Emu Community Be hit? It will be like UHLE, only this time, M$ will do anything & try anything to stop development :(

Yeah, Right! And if Microsoft wins this court battle, Microsoft would have my email as a possible XBox pirate.

Microsoft have every right to do this, if they are selling the means to play Pirated games on the console. If MS were to allow this, then more pirated games = higher game prices = higher console prices (seeing as the consoles cost is subsidised by licensing fees on the games). A lot of people also tend to forget that although Microsoft are a very rich company, they also employ an awful lot of people, so they are not all bad y'know.... I do have to say I dislike their anti-competitive streak though, and the way they have been known to deliberately try to scupper any competitors, ie the Netscape case, the Sun case etc

Another reason why I don't think microsoft can do this is because the xbox linux distro is reason enough why there are legitamite uses for mod chips.

DMCA does see this as a circumvention technique, but the DMCA is limited to the united states.

(or better yet, if the fair use legislation is passed, then the DMCA will have no jurisdiction on mod chips in the US either.)

And what a great ploy this is by them - M$ continue to piss off thousands of gamers rather than just PC owners... great idea guys! That'll sell them thar XBoxes to dedicated gamers. Oh, wait a minute, I think they've missed a tiny little flaw in that plan...

I'd like to point out that it wasn't solely Microsoft that sued liksang, Sony and Nintendo did as well.

Also in many countries (like my own, Australia) mod chips are not illegal. The ACCC (cant remember what it stands for, but its an Australian organisation that looks out for consumers) believes that making modchips illegal is an anti-competitive practice that force people to buy games from one country only (they have a similar stance to region-free DVD players). Not everyone who buys a modchip whats to play pirated games, many just want to be able to import games from oversees.

So does this mean australia is now the worlds source of mod chips?
