MS' plans for longhorn

I prey, not pray.
IIRC most of these things are being worked on pretty well.

Easy installation of drivers (no manual configuration needed)

Last I heard, the linux driver architecture was going to be overhauled, in fact, soon one driver will work on all hardware platforms, with minimal configuration needed.

More GUI orientated working, with CMD line features hidden substantially beneath the OS for advanced users

The french government, Lindows, RedHat, SuSe, and several other commercial entities are actualy investing a lot of money in this. About the command line interface, I myself would always like to have a console ready. They even keep the console in Mac OSX.

Compatability

CodeWeavers and Transgaming have gotten all of the more commonly used programs and more popular games to work great under wine, compatibility is increasing rapidly too.

Game publisher support

EA, idsoftware, Maxis, and a few others are releasing linux versions of a few of their games (id releases linux versions of all of their games, in fact quake3 was out for linux a few days before windows).

In other words, yeah, a lot can happen in 3 years

Just to point out a few things...

Linux is getting more and more attention from hardware and software developers more and more every month. Hardware developers are putting more resources into Linux kernel support, software developers are beginning to code in a way that makes it easier to port to different operating systems. Software developers have been doing this so for only for Mac and Windows compatibility, but now, because of the increase in users under the *unix/BSD/BeOS operating systems they find it more important to starts making their code portable to the maximum extent.

Linux driver support is increasing exponentially with the next kernel release (gotta love Linus :)). It has been said that most hardware that was created during or after 2000 will be able to directly compile into the kernel and that there will be a whole separate area for defining your hardware. Though you may not see your specific piece of hardware you will most likely see a device that is directly compatible IE: a Creative TNT video adapter and an Abit TNT adapter would run off the same driver.

This following year is, IMO, going be the turning point for Linux. More game developers are releasing Linux ports of their games, WineX compatibility is growing rapidly, most devices will be completely supported by Linux and as always users will see how much more stable Linux is over anything that MS has created.

With the new Windows builds that are coming out that spy on users and record their installations, web usage, and other misc PRIVATE functions people use their computer for I don't see how Microsoft can keep their grip on either the average or corporate computer user.

Not to mention that you can have Linux setup with Office, Email, Internet, game, programming, utilities, diagnostic and other helpful program for free, and that most of these program are coming out with easy-to-use GUIs.

For all of what I have stated above >>> after the year 2003 ends is there really a reason to use Windows anymore?

Umm, why get longhorn?
It doesn't have backwards compability. It's rather a downgrade i'd say. You'll only waste valueful money on shit.

I'm still a bit pessimistic about games support for linux, but now that Mac OSX is BSD, software should be easier to port between the two, so everytime a game is ported to OSX, we have that much more of a chance at it seeing a linux port.

Eventually Linux will rule i hope.

I am also advertising linux here.

I even held an informative evening about MS and Linux here and somehow it drew attention of some 120 People. And 64 people ordered an official linux copy the same evening of different distros like redhat, mandrake, suse etc and said to me they were even willing to learn to understand linux. Well if this is so then MS can say goodbye to the markte soon.
Since 1 if all customers go to linux gamecompanies also have no other choice then to go to linux Since otherwise we wont buy their product anymore due to incompatability

2 If MS loses the Game Industry and App industry and becomes a very incompatible OS still more people keep going to linux and eventually linux will be the marketing leader.

I have also bene thinkin about BeOS but they cant become leading unfortunatly enough :( This is due to they have waay to much incompatability now. and not only with progs and games also think about drivers and stuff like that)

Oh yea I forgot If ppl here have some spare time and would like to also advertise linux I got 64 ppl to convince if everyone does this Linux will eventually grow faster. I know 64 doesnt sound much but if like 10 or 20 ppl do this its 20x64 and i think thats good for a start:linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux: :linux:

I don't quite think linux is currently for everybody yet, but it will get there, microsoft wont hold that market forever (again, anybody who thinks otherwise is an idiot), just like apple never held the PC market.

EDIT: Then again, look at these two recent slashdot articles which suggest the complete opposite of my statement about it not being ready for mainstream yet:
