wow i can't believe someone here noticed 10 things (Stalkid, hi!). Any other guys here with a worrying habit of liking "chick flicks"?, good ones like the aforementioned 10TiHaY, Thelma & Louise, Moulin Rouge (uh oh, did i cross the line there? :D ), not really soppy teen girl ones like er... Crossroads. Other random movies i'm into atm.. Go, Four Rooms, Raging Bull, Requiem for a Dream (so i can't be all gay).

btw the current copy of 10 things on the Net is shite (encoded by a girl ;), wait a little i'll sort out a good release :)

The copy I got is fine anyway... as is my DVD... as is the signed photo w/reply from Larisa ("Bianca") Oleynik. I just love so much to mention that. ;)

ooooh /me gets jealous lol no if that had been one from Stiles i might be hehehe ;) no it was Heath Ledger that did it for me in that film lol nooo j/k ;) They're all very cute (oooh, bi). Seriously do you get the feeling boys/men are only supposed to like James Bond, horror, and anything portraying weak/subservient women (i.e. shut up and look pretty, bitch! - or wear lots of leather and be a man)... but i mean this in an entirely non-sexual way (yeah, right). Now don't get me wrong i can't cope with a Jane Austen adaption yet... but i'm working on it :p.

See here's a prime example of stuff i'd post here but never say to m8s IRL.

P.S. Stalkid stop quoting me, stops me editing my embarrasing posts :D

Some of the best movies I've got on DVD:

Gone With the Wind
Lawrence of Arabia
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Godfather 1-3
Braveheart
Gladiator

Hitchcock:
The 39 Steps
North by Northwest
Rebecca
Notorious
Strangers On A Train
Shadow of a Doubt
Psycho

All are must-see.

now those are some classic movies. the thing is, i have a lot of respect for good "old" (which i define as pre-1960) film, _but_i have this strange mental problem where i find it really hard to get over the "oldness" of something and enjoy it.. had a breakthough recently with Hitchcock's Rear Window - properly enjoyed that, several of those are on my "to-see" list, so here's hoping it wasn't an exception :)

Well Smiff, as long as it's not silent, I can really enjoy an old movie. You will find a lot of "oldness" in The 39 steps (1935, b&w), but I think you will enjoy the plot, and it helps when you choose the best transfer (Criterion, regionfree). If you watch North By Northwest (1959, colour, ws) afterwards you will notice the big improvements, but I consider both state-of-the-art. Warner's NbNW DVD is incredible, you will not find a pre-1960 film that look better.

I'd have to agree with that. The difference DVD restoration can make to an old movie is incredible. I had an official copy of classic film The Exorcist on video, and the grainy, old-look thoroughly ruined my viewing... it made the film seem very dull and boring and just basically like it had seen better days. It had a really `old` feel to it that just wasn't interesting.
Then I got it thrown in with Interview With the Vampire in a cheap boxset... and it looks like it could've been made just a year or two ago, and became one of my favourite films.
It looks like a brand new film, and somehow it has made the film much easier to get into. Dunno if that makes sense but there you go. I forget my point now. Damn. ;)

Smiff: I'll stick with Larisa over Heath thanks man ;)
(Okay, so the fact that I'm sitting here with a reply/photo from her framed on the wall over my PC should have lead anyone to that conclusion anyway...)

Smiff, remember this scene in Rear Window? :D

talking about 10 things, it was just on tv here a few hours ago :)
It was the second time i'd ever seen it and it is definately enjoyable, not one of the best movies made but a solid film :)

Mr. Super Clever
Digital restoration can do loads for a old movie. Its been done in quite a few and they look a hell of a lot better now than when they were first made:)

heh yeah well i have two categories - movies that i appreciate as quality ("art"), and movies that i like more than i "should" (i.e. the film appeals to me personally for some reason, even though it may or may not be great art :)), the two groups overlap a lot but not totally e.g. Fight Club is one i like a lot but see as a flawed "film". 10 Things i would actually argue is a very good film, in that it does what it sets out to do do extremely well, but i also understand a film like that is 1) never going to get critical acclaim and 2) be hated by a lot of people 3) probably become a cult classic in 10-20 years :). But I would rather watch something flawed with moments of brilliance (e.g. Fight Club), or something that people tend to love or hate (10 Things), than something well rounded and hence very widely popular (Spider-man - no disrespect to fans of, i like the film). I have a theory about how IMDB averages work (or rather don't) here that i might try to explain some time :p

Then of course theres a much larger third category of films i don't find appealing on any level hehe :)

lol, nice system you got going there :)

you see O? its suppose to be the same style of movie, same people i think but i never got around to seeing it. give us some opinions if anyone has watched

watch David Lynch films if u wants something different. the scariest film ive eva seen is The Lost Highway, totally fucked, makes no-sense (literally, lynch even said that this film is up to the viewer to decide wat its about cos he fo sho had no idea and he wrote the damn thing). i watched again the other nite, and this girl had to turn off the dvd player cos she was shitting herself so much.

obviously if u like getting a 'lil stoned now and then (or all the time, in which case uve most probably seen these films :) ) go see Half Baked and Killer Clowns From Out OF Space.

also Blue Velvet is a must see, fucking classic and Lynch's best work. Mulholland Drive, The Elephant Man are also damn good (and totally different to wat u would usually see).

also films by Darren Aronofsky, like Pi and Requiem For A Dream are wkd (although Requiem for a dream will depress u way too much).

ah yes, now "O", that is not a great film, but f--k (excuse the language, it's needed) i had severe trouble keeping my eyes on the screen while he's murdering his GF... strangling a person takes a long time, and especially when going from a love scene straight into a murder... jesus, that Shakespeare really knew how to write (btw I was at The Globe today looking around... ain't that a nice anecdote ;) :p) But yes, see "O", and i'll see some David Lynch.

homework assignment for all Emutalk readers*: go watch "O", and see if you can watch the whole movie without taking your eyes off the screen, and without flinching... i'm not interested in how shit an adaption you think it is or isn't, just that... hehe, even with the forwarning i doubt many of you can do it** :)

*that'll be all readers legally old enough to watch the film, of course...

**i sure couldn't

PPS that may be because of how i feel about the aforementioned Julia Stiles ;) :p

sorry to go OT but this, wow, i feel positively concise after reading this (i have no idea if this is a famous quote).

"I sort of go by a duck when I work on a film because if you study a duck, you'll see certain things. You'll see a bill, and the bill is a certain texture and a certain length. Then you'll see a head, and the features on the head are a certain texture and it's a certain shape and it goes into the neck. The texture of the bill for instance is very smooth and it has quite precise detail in it and it reminds you somewhat of the legs. The legs are a little bit bigger and a little more rubbery but it's enough so that your eye goes back and forth. Now, the body being so big, it can be softer and the texture is not so detailed, it's just kind of a cloud. And the key to the whole duck is the eye and where the eye is placed. And it has to be placed in the head and it's the most detailed, and it's like a little jewel. And if it was fixed, sitting on the bill, it would be two things that were too busy, battling, they would not do so well. And if it was sitting in the middle of the body, it would get lost. But it's so perfectly placed to show off a jewel right in the middle of the head like that, next to this S-curve with the bill sitting out in front, but with enough distance so that the eye is very very very well secluded and set out. So when you're working on a film, a lot of times you can get the bill and the legs and the body and everything, but this eye of the duck is a certain scene, this jewel, that if it's there, it's absolutely beautiful. It's just fantastic."

-- David Lynch

hmm (seriously) now i have to see this guy's movies, and maybe try to spot a duck :D
