Matching the sensitivity of the N64 controller

Hi guys,

My N64 controller has seen better days...as all of you old N64 owners will know, the analogue stick gets very "loose" after a lot of play. So I want to switch to my PS2 controller. However, I can't find the optimum sensitivity for the analogue stick. I understand it is all about the "range" meter, the "Real N64 range" tick box and the "dead zone" meter in the input plugin. What would anyone recommend as the optimum settings for making a PS2 analogue stick as near-identical to the N64 analogue stick? I'm playing Mario 64 at the moment and I don't have nearly enough control over him (i.e. moving the stick slightly right or left when running forward sends him darting off in that direction quite sharply).

One other thing, here's what I think to be the ideal setup for mimmicking the N64 controller:

D Pad: D Pad
Analogue: Analogue
Start: Start
C Buttons: up, down, left, right, on the right analogue stick
A: Square
B: Cross
Z: L2
R1: R1
L1: L1

Do you think thats the best way to go about things? Cheers!

I found out that on my PS2 controller, decreasing the dead zone and the N64 range gives me a more sensitive analog control over the game, almost like on the real controller.
But you will have to experience yourself, try different settings , and remember that you might wannt to use different profiles for different games.
I did actually preset a bunch of combination that works with most games genere.
For instance I have the same conoguration like yours, but I think you did wrong to assign R to R1, in fact Z trigger is the main index finger button on the real N64, therefore should defenetly be assigned to L2, with the R button on the R2 PS2 button. L can be easily assigned on L1 or not at all, because most games don't even use it( it was so hard to reach on the N64 controller ).
Secondly I named this configuration " Generic " as it works with most games.
But then I created a new profile and colled it "FPS" as first person shooter, and is like :

D Pad: analogue stick( as is not very much used, sometimes you can choose weapons)
Analogue: Right Analogue( as I move with the D pad and look around with right Analog )
Start: Start
C Buttons: up, down, left, right, on the D Pad, as I use it for movement( I don't use the analog for this because most games move with the C buttons, and it's not ment to be analog, therefore you get more precise control with the D pad )
A: cross
B: Square
Z: L2
R: R2
L: L1

And that works a treat with Turok 2 or Quake or doom or even GoldenEye.

Than I created several specific-profiles for games that use a certain combination of key-presses to make the task more easy.
For example in Castelvania, I remapped some of the d pad buttons on the circle and triangle to make it easy to use secondary weapons and with perfect dark ( which is the only game that I know of that allows you to use two controllers to have a dual analog experience ) I remapped the controller 1 analog on the PS2 analog stick and the controller 2 analog on the right ps2 analog stick, this way I can get a truly dual shock analog experience and move and look around in full analog precision !!
Those guys at Rare really looked forward !!
