Major problem with the CD-RW drive since I got my Asus A7N266-VM/AA motherboard!!!

I get the following symptoms when I try to burn CDs:

With Nero: I get the error message: "Could not perform fixation" or
"Track or focus error"

The above or Windows becomes unreponsive and thus hangs.

Windows often thinks, even when Device Manger recognizes I have a CD RW drive, Windows often thinks I have only a CD ROM drive. WTF!!!

I was able to burn a CD only once, and that was when I decided to force the secondary master into PIO mode and most of the time, I always get an error that halts the CD burning process.

You know when you right click on the CD drive in my computer, do you get a recording tab? If not:

1. Click Start, Click Run and type regedit in the open box.

2. Open the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CDBurning\Drives

3. Within the Drives key, you will see one or more Volume keys, whose names look like:
Volume {7d689e43-cd00-11d5-8166-806d6172696f}

4. If you only have one Volume key, then make the following change to that key. If you have more than one Volume key, then you may need to apply the following change to ALL Volume keys, and then undo the change for drives that are NOT recordable.
(This is a trial-and-error process. No harm will come from making the change and then undoing it.)

5. Select the Volume key. In the right data pane, double-click "Drive Type".

6. Change the Value Data to 2, and click OK.

7. After that, there will be a Recording tab in the CDRW device's properties, and you can enable CD Recording.

It'd also be worth your while updating the ASPI layer - although Nero tends to use it's own anyway. Regardless could be worth trying a different burning app.
