So, we have opinions on the drives.

What about the discs? Who makes the best dvd-r/rw with all the myriad types of burning that's possible?

Why would you want the best dvd discs, they are expensive enough as it is, you'll end up paying more for the discs than your dvd writer cost. A good and single dvd-r disc goes for $8, and a +r goes for a buck or two more. I'm going for the cheapest there is, $29 for a spindle of 50. They are called "AVB" and you can find them on newegg.com.

The 106D is 4X, but it's the external model (for my laptop). I say it works great because with the hacked firmware it rips at 12X, has never made a bad disk, and is extremely quiet.

i don't suppose you could send me a link for that mate?

does the hacked firmware improve the writing speed too?

Well, it's obvious that you missed the point.

Considering that this thread talked about good dvd burners that don't cost an arm and a leg, you think one would take the hint about dvd discs as well.

Let's see, I'll have to give examples it seems.

Fuji, Imation, Memordex. You know, the standard crap they sell in OfficeMax and such. The stuff people generally buy because nobody assumes they're selling their left nut to still buy something with good enough quality that they can put some trust in the product.

The quality difference between generics and brand name is virtually non existant, if you want to support your favorite company and their trademarks, by all means do so, i'm not stopping you :p

Well then, that's what I wanted to know.

The fact remains that I do have a preferred brand of cd-r, having found that other brands didn't burn as well (this was when I was still burning mp3s to disc so I had something to listen to at work).

I figured I might as well see if there's something slightly above the rest for dvd discs.

they probably don't make the internals, creative used to make CD-ROM drives, but i never heard of a creative burner, just save yourself the hassle and buy a pioneer, they've been in the industry longer than anyone else

Ok, it's me... again.

One more question.

Alot of burners are coming out now in 8x. Yet, all of the packs of dvd discs I see say "You can only use this at 4x".

So is there a point yet in getting an 8x burner? Get it to plan ahead?
