you can start xfre by typing startx
kde by using the kdm command

Once you get back into kde or gnome go to the mandrake control center and look for the boot settings, enable auto start login manager, then usto start KDE and put in your username.

Remember, never use root as your default user. It may be fustrating haveing to always type su to change to root (or suprt-user) but it can save hassel down the road.

Im sleepy, going to bed now

uhh,i musta royally screwed something up when installing those NVIDIA drivers. heres the scoop. when i login under the regular user name and enter kdm at the command prompt, it says must be in root, or something to that effect, so when i log in as root and type in kdm, the screen flashes a few times like it is tryin to do something, and then comes back to the command prompt, with no error message or anything. whats goin on here, am i gonna need to reinstall linux?

Mesmann i guess XFree is displaying some error messages when it quits, could you check it and post it here ?
I remember having such issues one day i had to change one setting in bios and it since that day it works.
The first thing to do is checking for this error message

ok, so i long into the root directory, like i said up above, when i type in kdm, it just gives me that flickering screen, then return to the command prompt. when i load linux, everything is ok, and i get no errors. when i hit alt ctrl dl to restart, i get one thing that fails, which is:
stopping dm: stopping display manager
this fails, and everything is ok.

when i log back into root, and type in kde, i got a variety of errors. First, i get:
roctl FBIOPA_DISPLAY: Invalid Arguement
(ii) [GLX]: Calling GlxExtensionInit

Fatal server error: caught signal 11. server aborting

This cannot be found in log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log"

fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server

then it brings me back tot he command prompt. anyone know what any of this means, or what i can do?

yes, you forgot to add the glx initilazation to your xfree conf file, ill edit this post in a min with instructions...

If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:

Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")

with

Driver "nvidia"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

if they exist.

i just said screw it and reinstalled linux. however, when i try to install the styles from that theme on that site, it gives me an error. arr, ill try to figure it out though, if not, i'll be coming back to you guys! btw, anyone know of a good linux message board for linux nOobs like me?

ok, well i konw what the problem is with the theme, i just don't know why. First, i try to install the style. i go tot he command prompt, enter the correct command to install the style, but it gives me this error:

cd: style: no such file or directory.

however, there is a style directory in the folder, it just doesn't recognize it. why is this happening? can anyone help me. it gave me the same error for the theme, except it said that the theme directory wasn't found. i was able to install that though by adding it in the control center. thanks alot again.

I prey, not pray.
mesmann: the nvidia drivers can be a tad tricky to newbies, in malcoms post, the quote he was refering to was describing how you need to modify your XF86Config-4 file. type 'vim /etc/X11/XF86Config-4' (assuming you are using mandrake, if redhat then I think its /etc/RH11/XF86Config-4, not sure).

make sure that when you rpm installed the drivers, they installed properly. If you are using mandrake 9, you will have to compile your own drivers, which is a pretty easy process. (I will explain it in more detail if you want)

you can use any editor you want, but I typicaly use vim. quick tutorial for using vim:

press 'i' to enter insert mode, thats where you can modify the text you see. When done, press escape, then you are back in normal mode.

when you want to save the file, press : then w then q, and press enter (you will see :wq at the bottom of the screen before you hit enter). To quit without saving (if you screwed something up) just use :q instead of :wq.

bash: style-install.sh: line 5: cd: style: No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat 'pixmaps': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat 'themes': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat 'wallpapers': No such file or directory
