linux cont. (old thread closed)

sicne my last thread was closed, i had to make a new thread. unfortunately i had a problem. when it got to one point in the install, i got an error. it said the file png.h was not found. however, it searches for it in the wrong directory, because i searched for it and it's in one of the other install directories. can anyone help?

thats png image support (i believe). Go to www.rpmfind.net and search for png. :S

ok, the install is finished. but, linux still boots up as KDE 3.0 (says version 3.0.3 in the control center). what did i miss?

i have linux set up so it automatically boots up into KDE as the default user. if i logout to the login manager and select KDE and login again, it still uses 3.0. help! im such a nOob

Hmm I have no real experience with this. I guess you are using kdm? I use gdm myself, and (at least in gentoo) kde 3.1 gets added to the session selection automatically.

another thing, it installed KDE in my user directory, not the root directory, was it supposed to do this?

i'm thinking about switching from mandrake to another version? any suggestions, prefebly something w/ some good documentation (as mandrake has great documentation)?

Did you do a "make install"?

Well, I can suggest Gentoo. The install guide is very well written, as well as the various other docs. Check out http://www.gentoo.org. You just need patience as you build everything from source.

Nope, they are binary. You can of course compile stuff if you feel so inclined

Now, if you find a kde3.1 directory that I'll have to look farther into the problem. If you only find a kde3.0.* directory then kde3.1 didn't actually install.

Also if you're looking to get a different Linux distro I'd suggest grabbing Debian. Debian has a very nice and simple packaging system that would have resolved all the problems that you have been getting. Also this konstruct program that you've been using doesn't sound to be very good

WTF? Debian for a home system?! Erm, no All packages are hopelessly out of date. Well, it does beat Redhat/Mandrake/SuSe any day though. Really it is either Gentoo or Debian. Both have some drawbacks.

ok, i do have a kde3.1 directory. it's located in my home directory:

file:/home/matt/kde3.1

and on the kde website, it said konstruct would make the compilation/installation easier, and since im nOobish, i used it.

the following is quoted from the konstruct README

After installation

After installation you have to set some variables allowing your system to find
KDE binaries and libraries and KDE to allow to find its own files, for Bash:

export QTDIR=~/kde3.1
export KDEDIRS=~/kde3.1

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/kde3.1/lib
export PATH=~/kde3.1/bin:$PATH

Setting KDEHOME too, e.g. "export KDEHOME=~/.kdetest", will tell KDE to save
your settings to this directory and leave default ~/.kde directory unaffected.

On shadow password systems you have to set $(prefix)/bin/kcheckpass SUID root
or SGID shadow - otherwise you will not be able to unlock a locked desktop.

The complete KDE desktop is started with "startkde", most distributions start
it if you set it to the WINDOWMANAGER variable in your shell initializations.

after the installation, i entered each of these commands in the bash prompt. im guessin this is where i made a mistake, as i think this is supposed to make linux boot kde3.1 instead of 3.0.

If the only KDE3.1 folder you found was in your home directory then you haven't installed KDE3.1 properly

There should be a KDE3.1 directory somewhere in either your /usr or under X11R6 somewhere else.

The latest Gentoo release candidate has an ebuild script for installing KDE 3.1.

any news on a possible final release of the next version of gentoo...i don't wanna install the release candidate then have a new version come out in a couple of weeks.

I dunno. KDE 3.1 is out, so that's a major milestone. I think the last large release they are waiting for is XFree86 4.3. And they are constantly fixing bugs.
