[LG] HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B Problems

I needed a new DVD-Rom drive for my PC to reformat my computer. So I got this drive for $47 AUS because I heard good things about it. When I put it in everything was OK. Then I started to install Windows XP but some of the files would not copy over, so I had to skip them to get passed them. Then when I got to the actual Windows XP setup after the formatting stage it keeps coming up with file errors. I tried this out on my cousin's computer and it works fine so it is not the disc.

I finally managed to install it but I had to skip a lot of files and exchanging XP discs because I have 2 copies. Now when I install things like Office 2000 and Halo and other stuff it stops during installation and says:

"Setup failed to extract file from E:what ever folder####.cab. This is mostly caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or a corrupted file cabinet."

Like I said before I also tried installing this on my cousin's computer and it worked no problems.

This error only comes up when it gets to (.cab) files. Can someone please help me because if its the DVD Drive I'm going back to Pioneer :D.

DVD movies work perfect by the way.

I've got this exact model of DVD drive on this machine, and as far as I can recollect I've never had issues with it and any make of CD. Though there was an incompatability with some demo DVDs from PC Format.

Not sure what your issue is, no HD errors at all I guess?

You could I guess attempt to do a repair install of XP in case your problem was a one time error. If it still throws up errors then note some of them down word for word, and search google for them on another machine afterwards :)

I have a suspicion that you dled this copy of windows xp from kazaa. if not, apologies. The reason i say that is because cab files are generally the largest files on a cd or dvd software and are almost always the ones that get corrupted. edit / although you did say it worked on your fcousins pc. hmmmm.

try cleaning the disc and drive. if nothing else you can try to make an image file of the disc and use damon tools to install.

if you did get it from kazaa its corrupted.

well i would send it back then if it (the dvd) works on other peoples dvd drives.

thoug i fail to understand why it would only not read the one file type.

Yeah I know its driving me crazy!!!
But I'm lost on the meaning of this:

Setup failed to extract file from E:\what ever folder\####.cab. This is mostly caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or a corrupted file cabinet."

hmmm, you can try after installing your windows (skipping the files) to go to run , type in sfc /SCANNOW exactly like that. it will ask you to put in your cd when it finds a missing file. if it still cant copy it from your cd then i dont know what else to tell you. take the dvd rom back to the store and trade it in.

I had this problem times ago, when i made a updated winxp install disk (with SP1 and some updates) and burned with some wrong options in nero and i had the exact same problem on files copying at installation time, if you will burn in nero you need to set the character set to DOS and not ISO9660 and some other options under bootable option i don't remember now......

Trade in your drive and use the ATA cable provided by LG (this cable is a hell good!!)
Since here in Brazil is the LG CD/DVD drives paradise (everyone have a LG drive) i can say that LG drives are good, Pioneer is a hell expensive here, since they don't have a local manufacturing like LG

he said he bought the windows copy monsiuer. if you can pick up a samsung (great drive) or a lite-on (noisy like fuck, great drive) or a sony (not as loud as lite-on) or an anything. or you could just exchange the drive on the basis that its screwed up :)
