Is it possible to link a N64 console to a pc/monitor and if so are the graphics in any way improved?

Yup, using either a pci TV card, or a video capture card. The quality realy depends on how much you're prepared to spend on the card. I think i remember lik-sang sellling converter boxes for
s-video > VGA as well.

converter boxes work miracles. Since the resolution on a monitor is higher than that of a TV, it would be much sharper. I play my PS2 and Dreamcast on the monitor all the time

OMFG you guys are weird......... Ever heard of a DEX-DRIVE!? If you actually OWN an N64 then you should........ We all know that you must own the game and system to use an emulator..... or you have to use it for coding education purposes, but that's only if you're the one to make the ROM off of an emulator machine......

mesman00

What's that...?
whaa?? he said nothing about roms, he just wants to hook up his n64 to his computer so he can play on his monitor

I was implying that these emulator users are using emulator illegally, if they don't know what a Dex-drive is..........:plain2:

are you trying to tell him to rip roms off his cartridges through the dexdrive?! Well, if you actually OWN an n64, you would know that dex-drive is meant for only using ur pc as storage space for mempak data.

Plus, your proposed idea of ripping your own roms is in everyway more illegal (well, its still in the gray area) than simply attaching ur n64 to a pc monitor...what stbens was trying to do in the first place!

whos weird now?

King of weirdos..... that's what you are. I was saying that you can use a dex-drive to connect your N64 to your PC, I said nothing about using it to copy your ROMs which it can't do; and it's not illegal. "You (The Consumer) are allowed one backup copy of any non-perishable product from or not from the manufacturer as long as the copy remains to the likeness of it's original" That is a segement of the law on copies of that kind of stuff.

hahaha once again there is no actual connection of the N64 to the pc when you use a dex-drive, so pj64er is correct in that matter, and who needs a dex-drive anyways when you have a perfectly good adaptoid with it's drivers installed? LoL not to mention I don't believe there is any support for the dex-drive as it's site has disappeared etc etc (not saying that www.interact-acc.com isn't still there but a lot of their smaller sites are gone)...
and yeah the orginal post had nothing to do with roms it was only about using a monitor to display with their N64...
and btw the improvement you get by using a monitor instead of a tv (Unless you have a high-def tv) is a crisper image, TVs have round pixels, which end up blurring your image, and monitors have square (some have hexagons etc etc but i'm not getting into that technology right now) thus creating a sharper image, and yes monitors support higher resolutions but it only helps if the image being sent to it is sent in those resolutions otherwise it will only be displayed as the n64's native res unless someone develops a way to boost the res while the signal is being converted inside of the VGA box etc etc...
my best suggestion is to read up about this stuff, a good place to do it is www.gamesx.com they have a lot of different tech items on consoles and comps, info on cart pinouts, controller pin outs etc etc go read some docs and then make your decisions on what kind of HW you wish to persue for your need

The Dex-Drive DOES connect the N64 to the PC, just not in the way that guy wanted. You can go to www.gamefaqs.com and when you look at some of their N64 games they have Dex-Drive saves for download. If you download a Dex-Drive save you can upload the save into your game thus there is a PC - N64 connection! Kupo!!! :sleepy:

the hell?

we're talking about connecting a REAL N64 to the Computer SCREEN. Not to the CPU.

k...if thats not what you meant, than ur original post doesnt make much sense. As well, it is well off topic. No one, until you came up, talked about roms at all.

your quote (which prolly came outta ur arse) is easily countered by: "Back-up copies are not authorized and are not necessary to protect your Nintendo Game Pak" [Super Metroid Instruction Booklet...the first nintendo manual that i can find right now]

if the dexdrive doesnt connect the way that stbens wanted, why the f**k did you even bring it up?!

Whos the king of weirdos now?

He didn't specify which way he wanted it connected to the PC until after I mentioned the Dex-Drive, I assumed he meant a way to just have a basic connection from the N64 to the PC. And those "copies are illedal" things in the instruction booklets means backups of games onto other cartriges which would be illegal because they can be sold.

excuses, excuses...

First Post

also, no, the manual did not specify cartridge back-ups, therefore backups of any kind (ie self ripped roms) is not authorized.

Uh, so I can assume that you trust some instruction booklet over THE LAW. I looked into it and when they are making the game it is illegal, but as soon as they stop making a game it's legal to have your own backup copy; cartrige or not.

list your sources, squaresoft0. that sounds like it came from some rom site, wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Plus this contradicts what you said before:!!!:

just give up, i have lost the will to continue this.

Well I DID say that I looked into it further and found more info. and yes, I was partially wrong. You didn't deny the fact that you trust your Metroid manual more than you do THE LAW. I would NOT list anything from a ROM site, besides, the only ROM site I go to doesn't even have an English info. section.
