I have checked out N64 emulation the last time when UltraHLE was the only real solution. I think Nemu was somewhere in the 0.2 stage and TR64 existed in an early stage but that was about it. I tried Zelda:MM way back then with the then current emus and it sucked miserably. Lots of graphical and or sound glitches additional to the unbearable slow speed.

Mario and Zelda:OOT however ran beautifully on UltraHLE. I didn't have much interest in these at this time however due to excessive play on my real system before I had to get rid of it. Ah well I always tend to get rid too early of my Nintendo systems.
:(

I followed the nonprogress of Ultra/Supra/Mega/UeberHLE with Zelda:MM for quite some time and lost interest.
At some point I forgot about N64 emulation alltogether. Way later I purchased a GameCube system. Now I am waiting patiently for Mario Sunshine and the new Zelda.
:D

A friend of mine is to blame for my recent new interest in N64 emulation. He asked me for a status update so I looked.
:)
I figured that this might be a good time to reinvestigate this issue since my own box went through several updates and the passed time should have improved the emus a bit.

I quickly learned Project64 was the current top emu and so I loaded up Zelda:MM on it. I was shocked how well it ran. I did a little bit of tweaking and it ran perfectly minus the pictograph glitch and the not fully centered notebook. I somehow even got rid of the day switch glitch or so I thought... I tried to reproduce the fix to post it here but now I can't reproduce it anymore. Maybe I was just too immersed in the dungeons that I didn't notice.
;)
Somehow I think this glitch only affected me near town but it really doesn't make any sense that this glitch is location based. I will post when I find out more.

I really appreciate the work Zilmar and Jabo and all the Plugin-authors like nrage and SJR have done to bring Project64 to todays incredibly high level. Also special thanks to Smiff whose awesome support, website, rdbs and docs answer virtually every question very quickly and effectively.
:pj64:
I'm very happy to hear that PJ64 will be semi-officially continued. 1964 also looks very promising. Maybe I can somehow contribute to this OpenSource project later myself when I find the time. But I guess I would have to study more on reverse engineering before doing so. Anyone can recommend a good book on this topic? This area interests me greatly and I'm just on the lookout for a computer science diploma thesis topic.
:)

Playing Zelda:MM on PJ64 really made me aware of my shitty gamepad: Gravis Gamepad PRO USB. It's really damn hard to aim precisly with a bad digitial pad like this one.
Repositioning the char so you can hit the target is no real fun. Yeah NRages modificator seems not bad but it's pretty unusable due to the incredibly slow movement speed once it's set to a precise level.
I played to the end of the 2nd dungeon until I decided it's not worth continuing like this anymore.

After some research I decided to get an Adaptoid and a real N64 controller. I only read rave reviews on this one. It obviously has great compatibility and even works in Linux supposedly. There is a new UK distributor which might prove useful for all Europeans lurking here playing with the thought of getting one of these adapters. Their email is: [email protected].
It was a though decision because other solutions like the Logitech Wingman Rumble or similar have been really tempting because of their much lower cost and higher availability but I think no genuine PC gamepad can hold a candle to an Adaptoid + N64 controller in any given game scenario. The precision and comfort of the N64 controller should be only surpased by the new Gamecube controller. I seriously hope wishtech is considering building an adapter like the Adaptoid for this one since I already own 3 of those.
:D
Oh and stay away from ZD! I first ordered there because they were linked from wishtech and because they had Adaptoids in stock or so their site claimed. My credit card order never progressed and all my emails remained unanswered. Wishtech removed the link to ZD from their site shortly after my inquieries with them. Those wishtech people are really cool and responsive guys!
I only hope ZD isn't charging my credit card now!
:huh2:

I'm increasing my rom collection while waiting for the Adaptoid since I can't touch the Gravis anymore without disgust. Yeah of course I simultaneously buy all those cartridges as well!
;)
I'm willing to test my roms (only (U) [!] of course) with any new betas and post the results anytime although I only have merely 54% of all (U) [!] roms known to GoodN64 0.999.7 (328).

Happy emulating!

It doesn't happen in dungeons. I think it happens only under the open sky.

As for NRage's. You can use your mouse to move the corsshair or bow or whatever to call it. Very nice, and very useful.

Interesting. But I'm not really after alternative solutions anymore. :D

My adaptoid finally arrived today! :inlove:
Worth every penny. Perfect elegant solution I have been looking for.

Works like a charm. F-Zero is a different game with the real controller. I now stand a change in Mario Tennis Star Cup and I can finally properly aim in Zelda etc.

I had some trouble getting the rumble pack to work however. I had hoped I wouldn't need to install the drivers because NRage's plugin notes stated direct Adaptoid support. But the plugin obviously still needs the drivers for the rumble pack.
StarFox slowed down to a crawl albeit without rumble when the "Adaptoid Pack" was selected without the drivers. Works great with the drivers however.

Do I need to change the default settings to get the best results? 2.01 didn't come with any testdx.exe to change values like "Range Clipping" etc. I don't want to fiddle with these settings anyway however if the defaults resemble the real behaviour the best.

Is the default deadzone 10% a good value for the digital pad in NRage's plugin? I assume "Adaptoid Pack" is the best choice with an Adaptoid.

:pj64:

Oh if anyone is interested in my old "Gravis GamePad PRO USB" tell me. :p
