Ok, let's see which of us can run Goldeneye at the highest anti-aliasing settings while mantaining stable 60FPS, and which GPU do you have (assuming that you have a good CPU). This is to explain the very high GPU requirement that Goldeneye needs.
First of all, we have to know that an explosion in Goldeneye causes a high slowdown, (that happens on a real N64 too) even more if you reach closer to it.
With emulation, you can eliminate that N64 slowdown if you have a good GPU, and get steady 60FPS even in a massive explosive room.
We have two tests to make sure that your GPU renders explosions at 60FPS, the first test is obvious, cause an explosion and run into it. The second test is here:
zSHARE - boom.ips apply this patch to a V64 goldeneye ROM, then go to the runway level. Where the tank previously was, there should be a green motorcycle. Then press B on it (make sure you have the invincibility cheat on). Then wait for the explosion massacre, and see if your FPS is still 60.
Please tell me if you can pass or cannot pass this test, and which GPU you are using.
My 7600GS PCI-E GPU (with an AMD 3500+) passes it, it gets a setady 60FPS and sometimes rises to 80FPS, but it has some 50-58FPS slowdowns slometimes too, and that is with 0x AA, 16xF, 1024x768. With 4xAA, it is 25-40FPS.
Now, obviously you won't have that amount of explosions in Goldeneye (except on Train), so you won't need a last generation card just to play it (except if you want to enable 16xAA, 16xAF and get 60FPS on explosions)
Now for the normal gameplay: (I have the latest ForceWare drivers, stock clockings)
16xAA (Forced NVTray 16xS): During the select File menu, I get 33-35FPS, during Surface 1, 45-65 FPS (average 50), on Surface 1, exploding a TNT barrel, I get 29-35FPS, after the explosion vanishes returns to 45-65FPS.
8xAA (Forced NVTray 8xS): During the File select menu, I get 75-80 FPS, average 78, during Surface 1, 70-115FPS, average 80, exploding a TNT barrel, I get 35-50FPS, average 45.
On 4xAA, (forced 4xS) I get no slowdowns at all, even on explosions, so I to play at this settings (or else, ignore the explosive 8xS slowdowns.
Please, tell me what you get with these tests and statistics, tell me your rig too.
Thanks in advance.
Oh, using Jabo's D3D8 1.6 too.
