I just did a defrag (a boot time complete defrag) on XP using diskeeper. It took 7 hours ans 22 mins and I canceled it after, look at the result:

Probably a lot of heavy HD disk usage. Media encoding, downloading many very large files. Installing a lot of software. ect..ect.. I normally defrag once a month or more or less depending on how much HD usage I've been doing.

On months when I do media encoding or download lots of files, I usually defrag more. Plus, if you use win9x FAT32 file system, then fragmentation is an even larger problem. The winxp NTFS file system does a decent job of keeping fragmentation down.

I haven't defragged mine in the 8 months I've had it.
But it's certainly not very appealing to try and do a defrag on a 60gig drive. :p

I'd just rather get a second, larger drive to install, and worry about any defragging much later down the line. :)

Yes large divx file encoding is a problem, I put alot of video on my hard drive, much of it straight from digicam. Also large file downloading and uploading doesn't help.

Smeg: Good luck trying to hold onto that, eventually even really big hard drives fill up.

Knuckles: Very pretty shots!

Ren: I'd have to disagree about NTFS doing a "decent" job, compared to most OSS systems it is pretty piss poor, but yes it pounds on good old FAT32.

Malc: Yes, but how are you going to run dreamweaver under Linux? :D

I look forward to ever decreasing hard drive costs, and to another external USB drive in my future... :D Maybe a 500 GB!!! Or should I say, .5 TB?

My HD never gets further than the Apprentice's HD... BTW is there any Defragment software better than M$ ?
