Well since Christmas is over, Im heading to the shopping malls in search of a good bargan. I have a budget of around $200 AUS dollars, and I'm wondering if you could help me out in finding a decent graphics card to replace my old Geforce 2, that is less or of equal value to $200. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated:)

I'm not sure on the value of those dollars : / More or less than US? /em is clueless.

But, you might try Radeon 9500, better preformance and features than the nvidia card, but with all the normal hell you get from ATI.

Personally a Geforce 4 TI 4200 is nice, got mine running at 325/575 with the manu. fan. Works nicely, and pretty cheap.

Both cards run about 150$ US from a good retailer, such as www.newegg.com .

I was going to upgrade my Geforce 1 to a Geforce 4 Ti 4200, untill my dad gave me a Geforce 3 Ti 200 for christmas!

For value go for the Geforce 4 Ti 4200. (When i say for value your still getting one of the best cards around and the value isn't compramising quality)

To Be Continued...
until nvidia releases the geforcefx, geforce4 prices will not be able to compete with amd's. unless you're planning on buying a card after february, i'd suggest getting a radeon card. 9500 Pro sounds like a good investment if you cannot afford 9700 Pro.

I have been doing a little research..but it seems the Gf3ti is out of the question. I am looking into a geforce4mx 440. Could you please go to this link and see what you think. It's price is around $220 AUS, which is about $110 American.

I really cannot recommend a geforce 4 mx to anyone. It is a dx7 card and will be obsolete within a very short time indeed, Doom 3 will be unplayable on it. If I were you I might look into buying a Ati Radeon 8500, which competes very well with the geforce 3 ti 500, and in some cases is on par with even the gf4ti4200. Also look at the Ati Radeon 9500 non-pro. Pricewise nVidia at this moment cannot compete at all with Ati.
Hope this helped :)

Thanks slougi, I'll now look into the ATI..but I would still rather go with Nvidia:plain:

with the exception of the "stripped" memory controller and AA capabilities, the geforce4 mx is missing even almost an entire geforce3 feature set, plus for the most part performance wise, not on par with even the lower end geforce3 ti 200 model - STAY AWAY FROM IT

i would check out the R8500LE, and if 9500 prices are still a bit steep, the R9000/9000 Pro would be into consideration as well

Actually, doom3 is based off of DX7 technologies. John Carmack stated doom3 will run great on a GF2 Ti+. I've seen the alpha in action on an MX 440 and it ran at abou 24fps, which is good for the alpha. An 8500 comes no where near a GF4 ti4200, it can barely keep up with a ti500.

the hell it does run at 24fps lol. 24fps is what it can manage on the opening sequence. when you run into an enemy, it drops like lead to around 5-10fps at the most, and thats @ 640x480

Actually what he has said that it will RUN on a gf2 card. He said going from radeon 8500 and up it will run decently. I don't think any hardware is out that will run it "great". No not even the r9700pro. Neither nv30, for that matter.

Ok, So since you are all badmouthing the Geforce 4 MX, I may be able to stretch the budget a little and go for a Geforce3 Ti..

You are all reccomending ATI, but my friends say to stear clear because of glitchy graphics in some games.

I have done some more looking, and I'm wondering If anyone is familier with the brand X-Micro? They sell a nice looking Geforce 4 Ti200 for $260 AUS, which is about $130 American, but I can't stop wondering if that is a bit to cheap for a TI200! Here is a link:

Please have a look If you have time:)
