Sex workers cry foul, say game "accrues points to players for the depiction of rape and murder of prostitutes."
The Grand Theft Auto franchise is getting attacked from all angles. Joining the ranks of politicians, policemen, and attorneys in their crusade to see the game lifted from shelves are the nation's sex workers. On its Web site, the Sex Workers Outreach Project USA is asking parents to assist them in calling for a ban of Take-Two Interactive's controversial game.

Citing a 2001 document from the National Institute on Media and the Family's David Walsh, SWOP is calling "on all parents and all gamers to boycott Grand Theft Auto."

The organization quotes various points from Walsh's paper, including, "Children are more likely to imitate a character with whom they identify with. In violent video games the player is often required to take the point of view of the shooter or perpetrator."

Though the organization admits to being "adamantly opposed to any and all forms of censorship," as concerned parents themselves, they "wish to inform other parents of the potential danger extremely violent video games pose to children." Likewise, in the interest of promoting the rights of sex workers, the organization is opposed to the depiction of the rape and murder of prostitutes.

In the games, players can solicit "services" from prostitutes by driving their cars slowly near them. No sexual acts are in clear visible view, but during the "transaction," the player regains health and loses money. Though the player cannot actively rape prostitutes in the game, a possible rape is alluded to once during the storyline of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The prostitutes, like every other character, are also subject to homicide at the hands of the protagonist.

According to its Web site, SWOP USA is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of sex-industry workers and to the promotion of a safe working environment for the industry.

And they don't realize this game is for adults. I have to blame the ESRB, the goverment, for not informing the parents enouht about the games rating. And of course parents are very irresponsible buying this games to to their little kids, and after that, they easily complain about it.

All the complaints against GTA say that it influences KIDS! While not an avid GTA player myself, I do know that GTA is designed to be played by adults, not 12 year olds. Even the developers, publishers, and ESRB say so. The responsibility is left to the hands of parents to actually enforce rules upon their children as to what game they can and can't play. Sounds hard doesnt it?

It is not the ESRB's fault. It is not the game shop owner's fault(s) (well, not entirely - most respectable places will not sell obvious minors an 'M' game). It is the parents' fault for not enforcing the ratings. (blah blah blah, flame me because I think parents should be "mean" and not let kids play "naughty" games, people mature at different rates, etc etc etc.) Personally, I think it's largely due to people not wanting to accept responsibility and when someone goes "crazy" they say "OH NO IT WASN'T ME. I'm the VICTIM here!!!! Those damn game makers did it to me!"

Really there is nobody to blame for this. Most places now a days don't sell M rated games to minors due to the fact that they can get in trouble. So therefore parents have to buy the game for their kids. And parents are too stupid to realize that the game has a Mature 17+ rating on the game. And on top of that, it tells you why it is rated that. Then they walk in on their kids playing the game and have the nerve to ask where they got that game from. Then they decide to go on strike or take it up with their governor or senator. When will parents realize that they bought the game for their kids, they were the stupid ones who didn't read the rating on the game. If their kids do something stupid like kill someone, steal a vehicle, or whatever then they are to blame. Even if they didn't know about the rating on the game, they still could have taken the time to bond with their kids. If that don't work, then the game is still not to blame. It's that the kid is just a mental case and deserves to go to a mental institution. That is just my thought on this subject, take it how you want to.

The worst for me on this particular one is that prostitutes are more concerned about GTA leading kids to kill them than the actual life that they live and its "occupational hazards"

Agreed. What next? You shoot someone and blame the gun? Christ. Obviously, there are rating systems for a REASON. It's not game developers' faults that some parents ignore it, then later become angry towards the game.

1.prostitution is illegal everywhere.
2.It's not ERSB's fault couse last time i checked on the GTA boxes there is a very big (and very noticeable) 18 icon. ERSB did their part now it's time for the parents to do their part.
3.Restrictions on this type of thing would be wonderfull but inaffective. Couse kids in nowadays know how to: 1.download 2.Beg parents to get it for them.
4.Even thought GTA influences kids it doesen't influence to the point of attempting murder.

Ban the whole game, I say...
Not only does it allow you to the worst things possible in the community, it is failled with bad language to the point that it flows over.
Even if you don't get the urge to kill, you still get affected by the language. I know, I've seen it happen (not to me, though).

Er, last time I checked, prostitution was illegal. Or is it not in the states?

It is legal in some places (with proper licensing or something) there's a few brothels in Nevada. As far as I know street hookers are illegal though. I don't use either of the above so I'm not certain :p

ACTUALLY

In Canada... Ontario at least, I cannot purchase a game if it has been rated "M" by the ESRB without the consent of my parents right beside me... and I am 17 too >.<

Plus, I have been playing such rated "M" games such as the ever lovable "Turok" series since I was in... WOW!!! GRADE 3!!!! Guess what?! I HAVEN'T KILLED ANYONE YET..... yet.

Well, most some places wont allow parents to buy the game if their kid is standing right next to them. Even now that I'm 20 I still get carded when I go buy a game with an M rating.

Persona User
God i have been playing M rated since i was 8 and i also saw a couple of C (18 and older) movies at that age and i'm no killer, doing stuff like that has not even crossed my mind ever, a game can't make a person a killer what can make a person a killer is the raising the parents give to their children, at least thats what i think.

I do not belive in censorshi; I believe that is contrary to the US constitution.

However, I do find it lamentable that our society has degraded itself to the point where a company can make money off of simulated depravity.

Why are these games enjoyable? Rant all you want about the gameplay, story-line, or "revolutionary technology", what it comes down to is that these games excite our desire to do a) do evil and b) be completely free to do whatever the frick we want.

And that is wrong. The human being, freed from all constraints, will not do what is right. Our minds are tainted with sin, and can never be purified other than through a divine act of God.

?????????????????????????
But some does. GTA is an evil game, and practically revolves around the stupid part of the american cultury that should be shown to no person.
