hi~ I'm new to this emulator and would like to know how much impact the graphics card have on performance? how does the GeForce4 MX compares with the Radeon 9000 Pro or the Radeon 9200SE? :whistling

I don't have any of the above cards at the moment, but can get them second hand from friends. thanks in advance to any one who takes time to answer this thread! :bouncy:

The best of this three is Radeon 9000pro (DX8.1).
Radeon9200S(DX8.1)(the worst choice) is 64 bit, and much slower than radeon9000pro
GeForce4 MX(DX7) is little slower than Radeon9000pro and is only dx7 card.
In fact Georce4MX is geforce2 Ultra. Geforce3 and Geforce4 ti are light years ahead.

If you have a bit more money buy Geofrce4 ti , it's the best thing for low price on the market. Don't buy dx9 card they are too expensive(or slow) . One exception Radeon 9550 costs 72$ and is good choice too. 72$ are a lot of money but it is good card.

Well, chankast is more CPU dependent, but graphics cards do effect performance a little, but with cards like the radeon 9000, 9200 and geforce mx's you'll get around the same performance, all of these are pretty much budget cards. If you want better performance, go for something higher than a radeon 9500 or a geforce 4 TI

Try to get a card with a more advanced feature set. Believe it or not, even a card like a FX 5200 would stand you in good stead for any kind of emulation, even though it is not a fast card, since it does have a better feature set than all three of the afore mentioned cards, and is roughly the same price. Emulation relies more on CPU power, so a 6800 or X800 would not improve the speed by all that much (only in v. high resolutions).

A year or so ago I got caught with nvidia's sly marketing. I had a tnt2m64/32mb pci card cause the motherboard i had at the time did not have an agp slot (yeah, i know). Then when i upgraded my motherboard i bought a geforce4 mx440 agp thinking it was a good deal. It actually gave slightly worst performance than the tnt2, and also wasn't as reliable. the one thing that taught me about computers is to never trust the name of any hardware.

look up the reviews/specs/benchmarks of all cards in your price range and then base your decision on that. i now do that for any hardware i buy and i'm extremely happy with my new system. graphics card wise (after much looking at benchmarks) i settled on a radeon 9800pro similar to Stezo2k's. obviously thats a more expensive card than you are looking at but the basic principle of look before you buy still applies regardless of how much it is. be particularly wary of anything that looks like it's a bargain 'cause there's normally a catch.

as for the geforce4mx440. it now collects dust along with all the other obsolete hardware in my wardrobe. i wouldn't give it to my worst enemy. :yucky: and here i was thinking that any agp card would be better than a pci card. :p

Most of us use our PC's for more than just Chankast. Ever tried playing Far Cry on an MX card?:)

As has been mentioned, there's no point in owning a PC if all you want to do is play DC games.

Maybe it's a better idea to swap yer PC for a Dreamcast. I'm positive the person you do this deal with will be more than happy to comply. Better yet, it won't cost you anything.:)

Couldn't agree more, plus we wasn't slagging off your geforce MX, I was just saying it might be a better idea to get a faster card really, like aika-san said most gamers won't just want to get a graphics card just to play dc games

I'd certainly want one of those~ :whistling
however, if that one was within my budget, I wouldn't be asking for opinions on budget cards....

I can vouch for that. I have an FX5200, and I can run Chankast at full speed sometimes at higher resolutions. You don't need a very expensive card, but buying a DC would still be much cheaper if that is all you were going to need a higher end card for.

chankast worked well with my geforce 4 TI 64 mb, in fact once you get a card 'at least that good'...all that really seemed to matter was CPU power, with the exception that some games needed ATI to run.

I hate to repeat what has already been said, but I have an example... :sombrero: I have a good card (Radeon 9800 Pro 256) but a midrange CPU (AMD Athalon XP 2500, for some strange reason underclocked to 1975 MhZ, and my BIOS refuses to let me change this), and I get the same framerate running at 640x480 as I do at 1280x1024, usually about 10-20 FPS on Shenmue 2 and slightly more on Skies of Arcadia. For computer games, on the other hand, the graphics card is extremley important, I can run Doom 3 with bareley any slowdown at 1280x1024 (Low antialiasing, though).

It's all a moot point anyway, the best way to improve your computer's performance (even just for websurfing or word processing) is to upgrade your RAM. A TNT2 in a machine with 1024MB would run as well as a GeForce ti in a box with 256.

If anyone actually reads all that crap, I'll be surprised.

Best of wishes,
xycos

Underclocked CPU I had the same problem on my Centrino Dothan 2 gig.
It was running at 1 gig and i couldn't do anything about it, I tried changing setting in Bios even flashing it but nothing I tried to do could get the cpu up to it's default speed. Finally I took the computer in to the manufacturer and they had to reset the bios, they told me that sometimes the bios can get locked into a frozen state and only hardware flashing utility can fix it.
So i suggest you take your PC in and get it serviced no point in running a CPU at a quarters of it's full speed. Unless you plan on dumping the cpu and buying a new one.

ok graphics card doesnt do hardly jack shit for this emulator right now. I'm currently having overheating problems with my graphics card so I hvae it underclocked to bare minimum settings. Other games run like shit, Chankast runs the SAME. With no difference at ALL.
