Got Chankast running, but the video appears with no text visable on the boot screen?

Hi,
I have installed Chankast with all the relevant bios files etc and have the newest drivers for my video card.
I am using the following

Nvidia Riva TNT2 model 64 (using April 2004 driver. Newest).
AMD Athlon 2400 XP+
256 meg Sdram
Asrock k7 motherboard

Running Chankast alpha02a (have tried alpha02 also, with the same problem)

The emulator starts, but the display is grey and dark blocks move around as it boots (I assume this is the swirl?). It then goes into the main DC display (controller, Memory card etc). The strange thing is that no text is visible on the screen. When I try and mount images or run a disc I get an error message but again there is no text, which doesn't really help.
If anyone knows how to make the emu display correctly with text, could you let me know.

I suspect that your video card is far too old for the graphics to be displayed correctly. Since the rest of your system is fine, I'd suggest a video card upgrade.

Has anyone else managed to get this videocard to run Chankast?
Hope I haven't got to buy a new card. I am getting some more memory next.
I can play other games perfectly with this card.

You may consider installing the latest BETA drivers for your video card from http://www.guru3d.com
Also make sure that you have DirectX 9b installed. If this doesn't work then you have to upgrade your video card.

No I am on 2000, but the new version says Chankast is compatible.
I will try the new driver.
Would Xp make that much difference?
My pc doesn't seem to like XP when I have installed it previously.

Well, running Chankast under Windows 2000 is a tricky procedure. You may not be able to run games with it. In that case search the forums and you may find a solution; If not, wait for the next release which will be fully compatible with Windows 2000.

People need to learn to read the FAQ, if you have a problem read that, instead of making pointless posts asking why your obsolete hardware doesnt work.

if your not up to specs i suggest an update, you could build a whole pc up to minimum specs for under 200 dollars.

low end Geforce or low end Radeon < $50

First off I can't see the text, so i don't know what the error message is.

As for Refraction. Nice agressive tone you have there. I have read the FAQ and found nothing regarding a problem like this. As for pricing, you are in the UK so why quote prices in dollars? If I need a new graphics card, fair enough, but you tell me where you get a Geforce for £25????

You can get a GeForce2 MX for £22, but you might as well go a better card.

Since you can't see what the error is, it's probably an error from dreamcast itself (not the emulator) that tells you to insert a CD-ROM in the dreamcast drive (common problem with non-bootable disks or Windows 2000 incompatibility). refraction was right, go to a shop with used PC hardware parts and you can find a GeForce 2 for a very small amount of money.

I don't really keep up to date with what is outdated etc. I just asked a question and got a bullish response from Refraction.

sorry for sounding a bit harsh about it all but a lot of people post problems on here on why chankast isnt working for them when something on their system is obviously under specs, you can pick up hardware that will work reasonably cheap these days, so it would be an idea to spend a few pennies on it

No problem. Sorry for going off at the deep end. Only had 5 hours sleep due to trying to get Chankast to work! :blush:

Looks like I might be looking for a newcard, if installing XP doesn't work. :bouncy:
