GBA SP - is it broke, the game broke, or just a glitch?

I just bought my son a GBA SP and Pokemon Ruby. He's in an area called "route 119" near a "Weather Institute". While he moves in any direction on the map there is this weird "flicker" or "stutter" to the graphics as well as it makes a quick low scratchy noise every couple of steps. He's not exactly sure when it started doing this, but did say it happened at another point in the game. When it happened the first time it apparently stopped as quickly as it started as he never said anything to me. Now however we can't get it to stop. I did notice if we start a new game or if he loses a battle on his current game this stops. It does not seem to matter if we save somewhere else or not.

I'm planning to go to the store and test the game on another GBA SP to see if it does there as well.

I was hoping someone has heard of this or even knows the fix. Any ideas what's going on here?

We don't have any other games to test and I'm just not sure what the deal is. I hate to have to get another unit too. This store has them for $50 used with a 90 day warranty, this was the nicest looking of the bunch at the time though.

thanks for any help.

Is the game genuine? A large amount of the super-cheap ($0.01 - $15) ones on ebay are fake and often have serious glitches...

It is a real one.

First before everyone laughs, I've only played Pokemon on the N64 myself and this GBA SP and the Ruby game came without instructions.

Get ready, I have the answer, his Pokemon was poisoned!

LOL! neither myself nor my son had any idea it does that when your poisoned. So that's why the game would not do that when starting new or losing a battle.

hehe. man we both feel like dummies. :)

I wonder if the HQScans project has pokemon ruby scanned - it probably does. Might be worth googling for it.
