Games that are WAY better emulated

Anyway, my question is: does N64 emulation allow you to play and finish titles? Like, has anyone actually started a title (such as Zelda:OOT) from the beginning on their puter and finished it? Or are there too many little bugs (even in the likes of PJ64)??

YES! I play and finish both OoT and MM on PJ64 (with other plugins) regularly!
There are small graphics glitches in almost every single game. However, with PJ64 (the best core emulator), you can COMPLETE something like 75% of N64 games.

Now, there's a big "if" to this equation. Well, two.

#1 - your graphics card. If you have an old crappy graphics card (or basically anything non-radeon or Geforce) you will experience either the game bad to the point of not working (graphics glitches up the wazu) or added graphics glitches.

#2 - Your cpu. This isn't SO important anymore. You'll want about a 1ghz machine to play everything at full speed if you want to avoid all glitches and play the game with the best settings

My graphics card sucks, but I believe with PJ64 1.5 you can finish Zelda with a whopping 1 or 2 minor graphics glitches (with ideal hardware.) The most common things are missing effects and such (and framebuffer emulation, which even that you can now get with some plugins, Jabo's PJ64 1.5 included.) I don't have ideal hardware, so I use Glide64/eVoodoo. The glitches are there, but nothing major.

Usually it's just a matter of 1) does the game work at all and 2) how many graphics glitches are there.

Now, there are some odd games that have core problems, but it's definetely a small percentage (around 25%,) and they are the lesser-known and less popular games.

I think Mario64 is the best emulated IMO. and it works perfect even on my old crappy 333MHZ machine with an onboard ati graphics card. I can play it at full fps, full screen with just about all options up except for the fact that I have to run it at 320x240x16 resolution. besides the res I can run it 100% perfectly here.

P.S. any ideas on other N64 games that can run the same as Mario64 emulated?

well, what do you think the native resolution for the actual console is? Ive been playing a couple games on the real thing and can tell you it looks pretty damned close to 320x240

Looking at your specs, I reckon Starfox 64 would run well too on a 333MHz, and maybe Quest 64 or similar simple games.

well, I have tryed Starfox and it runs as well as most other games. about 10fps-15fps. Cruisn' USA and Goldeneye are the worst. they run at about 3fps I think.

Look for roms that are around 8 Meg in size and released within 2 years of the N64 release (1996-1998) These will work best. Obviously this is just a guide and there are always exceptions.

Some games need a lot more to run than others, esp. Goldeneye, PD etc.

It's harder to tell than you'd think, huh?

N64 uses a fantastic analytic AA algorithm... and when it works, it works.

But yes, the base resolution for many games is 320x240, and some games go up to 640x480. Not many though. There's also an intermediate resolution, IIRC, but I can't remember it.

the only games that really give away the resolution are games like CUSA, Star Wars ESB, and there was another, but I forgot.

P.S. any possible external use of that AA algorithim? or is it in a kinda grey area right now?
