Plus! Will Mario Party 6 be the first game to make use of a Nintendo EyeToy-style camera peripheral?

Nintendo have confirmed that the official working title for their Gamecube successor - which had previously been dubbed the N5 - is Revolution. Speaking to investors in Japan, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also verified that a prototype of the machine will be unveiled for the first time next year, most probably at the annual E3 games show, which next takes place in May 2005.

Iwata, citing fears that competitors would filch their ideas, refused to reveal any firm details on Revolution, other than the fact that it would hook up to both televisions and computer monitors. Predictably, though, he did claim that the console will offer "new ideas" for entertainment. "What we need is not a next-generation machine but a next-generation way of playing games," he said.

In typically vague fashion he added that Revolution would be "of a different nature that does not follow the conventional path of new game systems that increase speed and visual quality for making elaborate games. The rule of satisfying customers by increasing specifications worked once but no longer applies now." However, he did confirm that Nintendo have "no intention of making a two screen console akin to the DS".

Iwata also discussed what he perceives as the current "crisis" facing the games industry being due to too many sequels. This from the man whose company is currently working on Mario Party 6. Speaking of which, it's being reported that the game will not require the use of controllers - which suggests that it may be the first title to make use of the EyeToy-style camera that Ninty are supposedly developing for Gamecube.

Finally, Iwata also spoke briefly of the DS, which he argues is another way in which Nintendo intend to recapture the casual gaming market. "With the launch of the Nintendo DS, we are confident of introducing new fans and bring those light users who have stopped playing games back into the fold."

Yeah.. interesting.

look, i'm sorry, but nintendo, WHAT THE FUCK! i might not want better graphics for my new system, but all those xbox "it has better gfx it pwnz gamecube foo" idiots do! they are screwing themselves over IMHO. i don't care for a new way of playing games (unless its a fully functional VR suit), my controller suits me just fine, stop trying to innovate and do what everyone else does, but better

It's kind of ironic that Nintendo, of all people, would be saying that the videogame industry is in crisis from too many sequals... Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Starfox and F-zero have had versions on every system since the SNES, ffs. I don't mind, they're still great franchises and the games satisfy me. Just don't come at me saying there's a crisis in originality if you're causing it.

Nintendo tends to innovate it's franchises, while other developers ream out identikit generic games that are virtually identical to the untrained eye.

-The Tony Hawk's games are a good example.
-Any game published by EA / EA Sports is another good example. (The Sims is probably the best example, along with FIFA)

Compare Metroid Prime to Super Metroid to see innovation in action. Just because they feature the same characters does not mean it has no innovation. Do Nintendo have to make up more and more characters to be innovative? Lack of innovation comes from a lack of any new ideas and making a sequel that is nearly the same as the first game.

The Mario Party series has been milked to death though and wouldn't care if it was axed personally. The GC has plenty of completely original games: Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Viewtiful Joe etc. etc.

Nintendo are the game gurus!
They make the first real "play in 3d" experiences on consoles possible, they were the first with the analog stick, rumble experience and many more...
I look into the future to see them making more great games... probably with some more new characters.
Looking for N5 or NGNext I read in another rumor...

I agreed with Clements. Nintendo may reuse their franchises but they are far from how most franchises today are raped and milked for money. Link to the Past is far different from Ocarina of Time, and OoT is different than Wind Waker. Nintendo has ALWAYS been innovative with their franchises and their hardware. Remember Adventures of Link for the NES? What about the Virtual Boy? Yeah, that's what I thought.
Unlike most companies, Nintendo doesn't mind sticking their collective necks out to see if something is going to kick ass or not. Can you imagine what would've happened had they not made the Rumble Pak for the N64? You probably wouldn't be playing with that little Dual Shock 2 of yours right now. :p Or hell, let's go back a bit further, remember the NES? Yeah, that was a risk too, everybody said the home game industry was dead and they still released it. In reality, you owe everything you have today to Nintendo in one way or another.

aye, but all those roxxorz pwn idiots out there only buy a game for its graphics! now, i'm not saying good graphics means great gameplay or bad gameplay (depending on how you interpret buying a game for its graphics), for example, i find farcry and halo VERY enjoyable, but i can't stand, um, well, those are the only MAD GFX PWNZ R0XX0RZ joo! games i play, and bad graphics doesn't mean bad gameplay, look at WCIII, that game is butt frickin ugly, its still fun, the new "Revolution" could go two ways, 1. into the houses of all college students, fat guys living with their moms, and spoiled kids, or 2. into the clearance bins of all stores worldwide, im hoping this goes as good as DS will (do you seriously view a 400 dollar portable, with a freakin GPS attachment they expect you to buy, to compete with a Nintendo handheld? go eat a fat one SCEI and stop trying to monopolize)

I personally could care less about how good of graphics a game has. I mean look at some games such as the GTA series, they don't have that great of gfx, but the games still kick ass. Also, I'm probably gonna get flamed for saying this, the gfx in FFX2 was great but I thought the game just plain sucked. I also still enjoy playing Chrono Trigger regularly since it's one of my favorite RPG's. So the point I'm making is that games don't have to have great gfx for a gamer to enjoy it.

Nintendo has always innovated things, that's what has gotten them this far, and that's what will keep them going. As people have already mentioned.. I must say though, either I'm really tired or your arguements haven't made a lot of sense. (Maybe a little of both..)

Not exactly.. They can keep the GCN alive several more years and still work on another console system in the meantime.. This has it's upsides and downsides, obviously.. But they aren't really "contradicting" anything.

1. i still play all the genesis sonic games, sue me :)
2. i bought FFX-2, and i compared it to FFX, its GFX actually are worse, the textures are much more aliased (could use some SERIOUS filtering) and the movements aren't as fluid, and the game downright sucked
3. GTA3 was awesome

How did they contradict themselves? That's what they said that the E3 press conference. Sony and Microsoft have been blowing smoke about PS3 and XBox Next for months now and Nintendo just announced Revolution at their press conference at E3. They're doing some hardcore development for the 'Cube right now and it's showing.

Nothing is new or changed, they are always doing hardcore development, for as long as I know them to exist.

other than the fact that it would hook up to both televisions and computer monitors.

This feature is most likley intended for use when networking multiple "Revolution" systems together. Not many households have 2 or 3 Tv's to use as displays for networking console systems, but there are a lot of homes that have at least one PC monitor. Nintendo is just making things easier.

12 player Mario Kart would kick ass!

ahaha yeah 12 player Mario Kart would!

I see what Nintendo is trying to do but if they don't stick with tried and true formula then they may run into a lot of problems outside of Japan. If they can keep the system cost down like the Gamecube then they definitely have a good fighting chance. No controllers though? There are a lot of people that like graphics and as well as playing games, they like to show them off. Nintendo still has it's kid reputation and will have a lot of trouble appealing to the masses as a system for kids and adults. They really need to find their market. If Nintendo could make a small super stylish system with lot's of functionality and of course great games a lot of people would buy it. Even if they make the best "looking" system they could sell a lot of units. Look at Apple, while they have a small share in the PC market they still manage to to have their own niche especially to rich people because at least they look nice (they are of course functional too, it just depends what you want a computer for). The Ipod has something like 50% of the portable MP3 market because it's the most stylish in looks, reputation, and functionality (it really doesn't offer that much more than the competition).

If Nintendo made a low powered system (maybe even with a DC-DC converter built in) that would fit in real nicely in a car environment they could have the most popular in car game/entertainment system. Maybe get some more good racing games on the system (gamecube is certainly lagging behind the competition in this respect). They could even bring Entertainment System back into the name. How about a case that looks indentical to the original NES but maybe smaller, possibly with an updated colour scheme or multiple colour schemes ala gamecube? There are really unlimited possibilities with what Nintendo can do we can only hope they don't make something that causes their downfall because I really hope Nintendo is around for years to come.

Exactly. Allot of the inovative stuff that nintendo experiments with never really appeal to the ppl outside Japan.
