FPS problem--very low

First, I appreciate any help offered. I've already looked over the message board here and through the manual and everything else. So far, to no avail.

Here's my problem: I've been playing several ROMs and, aside from F-Zero X, all of them have constant dips in FPS. As well, all of their audio jitters like a skipping cd. These problem games are Mario Kart, NBA Hangtime, WCW-NWO Revenge, Smash Bros., SW Shadows of the Empire, Body Harvest... and a few others. They all dip to around 15-30 FPS, usually when moderate-to-heavy action occurs; for instance, in Mario Kart, when more than two racers are on screen, the FPS dips; or, in Shadows of the Empire, the closer you get to enemies, the more the FPS drops.

I've tried numerous alterations to the settings. Like playing with resolution, sync'ing audio and not. Antialiasing is off, and so is antisotropic filtering in the graphic configuration tab. I've tried turning audio off. Of course, I have no other programs running in the background when I run project 64. Nothing has worked to fix the massive FPS drops. SNES, Genesis Roms, and regular PC games all work fine on my system... just not N64 ROMs.

My specs are:

Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz
Windows XP (SP1)
640 SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9200 (with latest driver)
Direct Xc

Again, any help that anyone can offer is much appreciated. Thanks.

At your service, dood!
Snes and Genesis emulation is far less resource hungry than N64 Emulation, a really old system could handle those pretty "ok"; Slow FPS in an n64 emulator usually means your processor speed is too slow.

Go into Start, click Run and type Dxdiag in and tell us what it says next to processor.

Oops, forgot to put Pentium 4 1.7. I edited above as well.

I realize that genesis and snes aren't demanding programs. Bad reference, I guess, in showing that other games work well on my pc. Anyway, regular pc games run fine on my machine.

first download the beta rdb from the sticky thread - see if that helps Star Wars SoTE or Smash Bros.

I d/l'ed the beta rdb, and, as you guessed, Star Wars SoTE and Smash Bros. both work great. Thanks a lot Smiff.

As for the other ones that I tried, like Nagano Olympics, WCW vs NWO Revenge, NBA Hangtime, Body Harvest, and Mario Kart, they still dip real low in FPS. Any ideas?

Even if I can't get those to work, I'm glad I've got the other two anyway. Thanks again.

that means the issue is Advanced Block Linking. unhide advanced settings, go to ROM Settings and turn it off wherever it bothers you. presumably you have a fast enough system. note that some games may (rarely) not work with it off .

that won't help for games like NBA Hangtime and Body Harvest, which are video plugin issues or slow generally.

Excellent. I just tried Mario Kart with the new setting and it runs great. Wcw vs nwo revenge also runs way better. Thanks once again Smiff!
