Fake ROMS? Nothing illegal here, don't delete

Quick question. What is the format that N64 ROMS should be? I don't want to get fake stuff that's actually a virus. I want to play legal ROMS (user created ones, games I already own).

Oh and, for FPS (first-person-shooters, not frames per second [in this case]) games is there mouse aiming. I would love to play Perfect Dark (which I own and love) with mouse aiming. I'm new to the boards, if even mentioning ROMS was against your rules, I'm sorry.

1) roms can really be any extention, but commons are v64, z64, rom
2) Yes, you can use N-Rage's input plugin and get nice mouse support
3) Asking about roms is fine, asking how/where to obtain roms is against the rules
4) http://www.emulation64.com/demos.php <-- largest archive (that I know of) for getting those home-made roms we all enjoy and can legally have.

Just a couple of tips.

First, you should download the following tools to validate your roms:
- GoodN64. It's a DOS program that will verify the validity of your n64 roms and rename the file to the correct ROM name.
- GoodWindows, by MasterOfPuppets. this is a nice windows-native shell that will allow you to run goodn64 from a nice GUI, and did i mention it's nice?

and second, if you want a quick rule of thumb to tell whether you have a valid rom, and you're fairly proficient in math, here it is. the filesize of an uncompressed ROM will be a power of 2 kb, or a sum of a few (consecutive) powers of two.

if at this point you're saying, "shut the fuck up, geek," then you'd better just stick to goodn64. but to further clarify: 2^13 = 8192. so a rom that has a filesize of 8192 kb is most likely really a rom (super mario 64, wave race). other powers of 2 that are common n64 rom sizes are:

2^14 = 16,384
2^15 = 32,768

some roms have a size that is not a power of two, but a sum of a few powers of two. for example: Diddy kong racing is 12,288 kb. 12,288 is the sum of 2^12 + 2^13 = 4096 + 8192 = 12,288. WWF Wrestlemania is 28,672. 2^12 + 2^13 + 2^14 = 4096 + 8192 + 16384 = 28,672.

Also note that roms with sizes of sums of powers of two must be consecutive powers of two. i.e., 2^13 + 2^14 + 2^15, not 2^13 + 2^15.

hopefully this interests somebody.

Just avoid anything that's an .exe, or a document or email extension. There are MANY possible N64 ROM extensions, these include:
.v64
.z64
.n64
.rom
There are at least 5 others, but it doesn't matter. What you download will most likely be zipped, and may even be a self-extracting .exe (i'd be very cautious with those - open them with winzip and/or winrar if at all possible instead of executing the exe - which may be a virus.) The place you are most likely to get exe files are on (a) certain file sharing program(s), which require an .exe extension to put them in the "software" category, instead of the "other" category, which is why you find so many (often virus plagued) exe's on zaaka *wink*

In the end, if the file is 10+ MB, it's *most likely* not a virus. If it's a small file, it's not an N64 ROM.

All N64 games range from 32Mb (megabit's) to 512Mb, and the math is really simple:

(Cart size)/8 = (Cart size in megabyte's) * 1024 = (Cart size in kilobyte's) * 1024 = (Cart size in byte's)

32Mb/8 = 4MB * 1,024 = 4,096 KB * 1,024 = 4,194,304 B - Cart size for Dr. Mario
64Mb/8 = 8MB * 1,024 = 8,192 KB * 1,024 = 8,388,608 B - Cart size for Super Mario 64
96Mb/8 = 12MB * 1,024 = 12,288 KB * 1,024 = 12,582,912 B - Cart size for Diddy Kong Racing
128Mb/8 = 16MB * 1,024 = 16,384 KB * 1,024 = 16,777,216 B - Cart size for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
256Mb/8 = 32MB * 1,024 = 32,768 KB * 1,024 = 33,554,432 B - Cart size for both Zelda games
512Mb/8 = 64MB * 1,024 = 65,536 KB * 1,024 = 67,108,864 B - Cart size for Conker's Bad Fur Day

I only have one ROM image that's 224Mb (a bad copy of Zelda: OoT), so I don't think WWF Wrestlemania is a 224Mb cart.

Sorry, I thought Nintendo Power said it was a 128Mb cart (it's been about 3 years since I last looked at that issues)... I'll put Star Wars: Rogue Squadron in it's place, I know that one is a 128Mb cart.

ummm.... for the record every rom i've ever seen/dealt owned has been a .zip extension.

and of course you can leave it that way in any modern emu.

peace...

I second (or third) the thing about Winzip/WinRAR. Yeah, it's nice to have your ROM in a self-extracting program, but usually newbies don't have WinRAR or WinZIP and it's so simple to slip a 1kb Virus in it :-/

Oh, you can't get a virus from any ROM image as far as I know. Saying this, I mean it's uncompressed and ready to run. The only time I have had a rom crash a computer was when I tryed to play Golden Eye on Nemu back about 5 years ago on my old 266Mhz. The thing crapped out :getlost:

Hey guys. How do I get that plugin Malcolm was talking about? And when I do get it (pardon my newbieness) what do I do with it? Also when I was playing a certain "golden" FPS :gunman: (which I own) ROM off "zakaa" :satisfied the graphics got all messed up. Is this because I own a GeForce FX 5600 (games like GTA: VC have corrupted graphics when run on a GFX). Do I need a plugin for my card? also, once agian, what would I do with it.

Um, first off, welcome. Second off, you can mention game titles fine, and I don't know about the rest of ya, but I don't think anyone really cares if you own the game or not. One thing though, just don't say where you got it. That's like asking a certain person to kick you in the nuts, and I mean square in the nuts.

Anyway, what emu are you using, and what plugins?

I'm using Nemu64 and I have no plugins, except for some official .ini file

// Initializition file for Nemu64 0.7a
// -----------------------------------
//
// Official Release v1.0 - 08/09/2000 - created by EmuManiac & Myzar

I don't know if this is outdated. If it is, where do I get a new one. Also, where do I get that Mouse Aim plugin Malcolm was talking about. N-Rage. Anyways, do I need a plugin for my GFX 5600? Just so you ca get a good idea of what my Nemu64 folder on my desktop contaains, i have attached some pics.

okay, I just viewed my attachmets and the forum can't find 'em. So I'll type them by hand. The folder is named Nemu64 and is on the Desktop. It's Contents are:
Plugin (folder)
ROMS (folder)
config (I think it's a .ini) (which reads as follows)
// Nemu64 Configuration file

[Configuration]
RDRAMSize=8
Resolution=640
SortMode=1
Column0Width=200
Column1Width=248
Column2Width=116
Column3Width=21
Column4Width=124
ColumnOrder=0000000001000000020000000300000004000000050000000600000015
Folder=.\ROMS\
ShowErrors=0
Column5Width=0
Column6Width=0
GFXDLL=LemD3D8.dll
MEMPACK_EEPROM_PATH=.\
CART_EEPROM_PATH=.\
SRAM_PATH=.\
SAVESTATE_PATH=.\

[GFX]
Width=800
Height=600
DevType=1
Adapter=0
Fullscreen=0
RefreshRate=60

(that's the end of the file)

gs_dll.dll
kailleraclient.dll
LemD3DCombine (.DAT)
LemD3DCombine.new
nemu64 (.exe)
nemu64 (I think it's a .ini file) (which read as follows)
// Initializition file for Nemu64 0.7a
// -----------------------------------
//
// Official Release v1.0 - 08/09/2000 - created by EmuManiac & Myzar
//
//
// Nemu64 Coder: Lemmy, LaC, hWnd (until v0.7a video.dll), Atreides (video.dll)
// Nemu64 beta Tester: Coolbest, EmuManiac, Myzar and ZoRiC
(too long to put the rest)

Now, I'll give you the contents of the Plugin folder

audio.dll
debugger.dll
dialogs.dll
Input.dll
LemCombineDebugger.dll
LemD3D8.dll
profile.dll

That's it!

I don't know if you needed all that, but I'm a newb, so forgive me.

Edit (12:42 PM, 9/17/03): I'm using (according to the help about.... and about video plugin) Version 0.8 and Lemmy's Nemu64 Direct3D 8 Graphics Plugin.

You got a 2Ghz with a decent Graphics Card, man, go d/l PJ64 or 1964. You got tda powa to pull it, and Golden Eye shouldn't give you too much problems...

I need an honest opinion from everyone here. I have an awesome system:
Windows XP Home sp1 (tweaked to look like Mac OS X)
Intel Pentium 4 2.0A Ghz
Aslylum NVidia 256 MB GeForce FX 5600
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1
512 MBs DDR

So what emulator should I use? I've heard PJ64 and 1964, but are these really the best? If I get 5 or more opinions, I'd really appreciate it.

C'mon guys, help a newb out? :satisfied
