Dosbox

Just Another Wacko ;)
Some of you may have already heard about Dosbox (or used it), it's a multy-platform DOS emulator with great compatibility but low speed so only 386-486 programs (and games) could run fullspeed. The latest windows version (0.61) includes a dynamic core that makes the emulation speed much faster. Unfortunately the core has many bugs so crashes are common. The good thing is that the latest CVS releases have a more stable dynamic core so it is possible to run some programs with high requirements :D

Here is an example (fullspeed of course) :)

Nice to hear the dynarec side of things is getting more stable :D DOSBox is a great emulator, more speed and stability is always welcome though ;)

You can find the latest official version here but if you want an unofficial CVS version you must go here.

Wel, both games are compatible with the latest version :)
Well, the are compatible if they're not rips. Sadly enough Dosbox doesn't support "subst" command, which is used in start.bat in Hybrid's release...

I think that "subst" is supported in the latest CVS version (not 0.61) but I haven't tried a program that needs it.

Hey Guys!

Yep, it's Ieremiou. I build the DOSBox CVS versions at http://mypixels.dk/forums.

:) I love DOSBox man. I'm not the original builder of the CVS versions nor am I actually a developer for DOSBox.

If you want the original forums for the Official DOSBox version go to vogons.zetafleet.com.

The latest unofficially released versions (CVS) can be found periodically on the mypixel forums. (not mine either) I just help out the original forum leader RJPA since he's on and on and off basis for other reasons.

Note: The CVS version is much faster then the Official Version for the moment since official releases are like on a 2 times a year basis. Also to note is that you'll need a decent computer (perferably running Windows XP) to make DOSBox worthwhile.

Some games that people might want to know that work with the CVS version of DOSBox but (I forget for sure) may not work withe the Official version.

Ultima 7 and 8.
Wing Commander Series and Wing Commander Privater / Righteous Fire
Strike Commander
Crusader: No Remorse and No Regret
-- Not completely supported yet but do run fairly good.
Many of the Sierra Adventure games.
Many Lucasarts Adventure games.
Many other games like old DOS games that you can download from http://www.the-underdogs.org.

Also Soundcards are emulated primarily Adlib, Soundblaster 1 to SB16, PC Speaker, Disney Sound Source, Gravius Ultrasound (You need to install the drivers onto your harddrive through DOSBox to use GUS), CMS (Early Soundblaster), Tandy 3-Voice, MPU-401.

Many other things. Also there is a DOSBox Wiki Guide at http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki
And IMHO the best Frontend for DOSBox called D-Fend is located at http://members.home.nl/mabus

Have fun kiddies, :p

Note:
Also some DOS emulators work in DOSBox. Even ZSNES but DOS ZSNES crashes rather quickly. Oh well. ZSNES Windows is much better anyways overall.

I haven't looked much into the old DOS Emulators since many of the Windows Emulators are better overall.

Lol, I've been a "silent" member on this board. Just watching as improvements to the N64 Emulators came and slowed down. Now they are in essence behind close doors I believe. Seems like "most" emulators are like that nowadays that are fairly rooted down.

Man, there are so many games I wish worked in Dosbox. I'll definately take a look at the CVS stuff.

And maybe someday a dos emulator will run Myst & Riven, so the darn trilogy set I bought for my dad last Christmas can actually be played on his Win2k machine! :)

I don't want to register for another message board just so I can download the CVS. I can see why they require it though. I'll likely just wait for the next official release.

Waiting for an official release is not always the best choice. I don't want to register on other message boards either (3 are enough) but you can find CVS builts elsewere (google it), plus you can download the source from sourceforge and compile it by yourself.

You're right of course. I just got my lazy fingers on Google and found a build only a few weeks old here.

I'm eventually going to move it to its own website but I haven't got my hosting officialized yet. We'll see soon.

ive dled this nice little proggy and it enbaled me to play a game long gone :D from my earlier compy periods (even though when i started playing 3,1 was in the scene and 95 was to come pretty soon or so)
it was a dos proggy now it works :D if some1 know it its the <even more> incredible machine
=p
i read somewhere about a dynamic core with this but how do i activate cuz when i add many elements ( and mels to blow up  )
it is kind of laggy and i have to increase the cpu cycle so the irrating music =p gets even more irrating with slowness in sound but you can live with it but i heard there was something dynmaic core that speeds up =p well sorry for doing this posts longwinded (as usual i dont have the power to keep posts short and readable due to my abilty to babble when i feel like =p)
but how do i activate that?

LOL =p edit: i found out... me is unneccsary  i had to do some config something
