Does Project64 even need DirectX 8 support?

(I posted this question in the Thinkpad T40 thread but thought it merited its own thread.)

Does PJ64 even use any features above DirectX 7 (for most/the most popular games)?

I'm going to buy a laptop with an older ATI Radeon 7500 in it. The Radeon 7500 is fully Dx7 compatible and can also support most of Dx8 (sans Pixel Shaders, SmartShader and TrueForm).

So is Pixel Shaders, SmartShader and TrueForm even used in n64 emulation? If not, a Radeon 7500 should be good for N64 emulation right?

The complete specs of the system will probably be:

1.4ghz pentium-m
768mb ddr ram
ATI radeon 7500
40gb, 5400rpm hard drive

I'd like to run emulation in 1024x768 resolution and get 60fps consistently (at least 45fps). The games I'll be playing are probably Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Zelda (both of them), Mario64, Mario Party 3&4, Pokemon Stadium, Paper Mario, SSB's and some others. Is it probable I can get that type of performance with the specs given above? Thanks.

The most recent PJ64 is DX6-based. Most games will work great on that laptop, but Paper Mario and Mario Tennis still have graphic glitches (Rice's new plugin might fix some of the problems). And Mario Golf has slowdown on my 2.0ghz P4 just because it uses heavy framebuffer effects.

I would use 1964 for Mario Golf as the speed will be better.
