Direct3D Device Creation Failed? WTF?! WHY?!

Alright, I'm having some fucked up problem with Naruto 3.
I already read another topic about it but I gotta say it's quite impossible that this problem can be due to the same cause.

When I try to load Naruto 3 it immediately tells me: Direct3D Device Creation Failed, and by immediately I mean within the first second of loading :S.
I saw other people say that this is due to inferiority of the gpu, but people come on, I have a.
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
1024 MB DDR RAM
2x GeForce 6600GT (in SLI mode)

You can't tell me my GPU's are inferior. I might understand that the program is unable to work with SLI. But even when I turn off the SLI it still gives the exact same message.

I also shrunk the GCM file 3 times with no effect. What do I need to do to get this piece of $#%(*^$%^ working? :p

directally from the furom rules
"Try switching to REF in the dolphin video plugin settings, if it doesn't work, it might be because you have an old video card and you should probably change or you are using old drivers, update them"

also update direct x, if you have win 3.16, 95, 98, 98 se, or ME , give up ;p

Very typical but I my computer is brand new and not even 2 weeks old. Like it says my GPU's are quite good and considering that the computer is new it also required me to reinstall all my drivers. And no, I'm not a moron running an unstable old OS on such a pc. So now what?

EDIT: And no, not HAL nor REF work

I'll state the obvious, you must be running directX 9.0c and also the latest gfx drivers. Since you're "not a moron running an instable old OS"...... I asume you already have these......

When you look at the plugins available do they all show? In the dolphin menu I mean, not the folder in explorer :p

Have you tried the "optional DLLs" from the dolphin site? Try sticking them into system32 and also the root dolphin folder.

Make sure you haven't turned on 6x AA, that can create a D3D device failure. 2x / 4x work fine with nVidia cards, 6x is for ATi. (/me pokes ector for 8x)

Thanks for the tips, it seems to work now.
Well work... the game runs smoothly till the actual fighting begins, then it fluctuates between the 8 and 15 fps on 1024x768 and with 4x multisampling. And it's a little buggy at some points. But well, already happy to actually see the game run :)

Strangely enough, tuning down some settings doesn't improve the game speed, it sometimes even degrades on lower settings.
