Default memory size: 4mb or 8mb?

Which is the optimal setting, 8mb or 4mb? Is it system dependent?

Its game dependant, 4mb is a normal game and 8mb is a game that requires the N64 expansion pack. The RDB should set these options automatically, its reccomended you use them.

Will it screw up non-expansion games to have the expansion set to on?

No, but if you are short on memory you are adding 4Mb of unneccesary memory to the usage, which might slow down emulation on a low- and midend system...
