Crashing!

Hello everyone!

I've just started with Project 64 (I had it before, on another computer, but my father sorted it out, not me), and I've been having problems. Project 64 crashes after about 1 minute of running anything. I did my best and managed to stop getting error messages about graphics, but the doesn't help if the emulator crashes. =p

I'm almost sure that I have the requirements, as I have a fairly up-to-date computer, and I haven't experienced major problems with games in the past. As I mentioned, I had Pj64 on another (older) computer, and the games I was playing ran fine.

I have the following Roms: Super Mario 64, Mario Party 3 and Paper Mario. (Yes, I'm a Mario fan =p )

Could anyone suggest anything? I'll try my best to supply any necessary information.

It doesn't hurt to give us your system specs, or at least what you know.

It'd also be nice if you could give us a description of "what's going on" when each game crashes.

Well, I have an Intel Pentium 4, 3.06ghz, 512Mb of RAM.... I don't know how to find out my graphics card.

I'm running Windows Xp Home Edition.

It crashes about when I get to the Castle on Paper Mario, when Lakitu is talking on SM 64 and on the main menu in Mario Party. I don't think where I am has anything to do with it though. I sometimes crashes before these points. I've tried using 16-bit colour, and that does work to a certain extent, things look better, but it still crashes.

I think it might be something to do with graphics, because before it crashes, if I'm talking to someone, something weird happens like all the "t"s disappear. o_O

Also, the graphics are kinda messed up, but I'm not too concerned about that, it's nothing major. It might be related.

So, that''s about all I can think of.

You can find out your graphics card by going to Start --> Run, typing dxdiag and pressing Enter. After that, open the Display tab in the program that opens up.

Ok, I have an Intel 82845G/Gl/(Ab bunch of other G-somethings) Graphics card.

I tried the plugin you recommended Enzo, but it didn't help. Thanks for trying though. :)

I said it might be something with the graphics, but I can't be sure. Thanks for all your help! :D

Use Jabo's Direct3D6 plugin. Intel's integrated graphics chips (they're not cards, mind you) are known to have poor performance, especially in emulation.

Thanks, that plugin worked a treat! It's not crashing anymore, which is good! I can play Paper Mario and SM 64 without complaint! :)

Now, I have a different problem. >.< Mario Party is all laggy, to the extent that it is inplayable. So, if anyone has any suggestions....

Thanks for all your help guys! ^_^

Edit: Mkay, I got up to the Star summit on Paper Mario, and after a long cutscene it stopped and I got an error message that said "Cache: Falied to translate: 0" I clicked "Ok" and it said the same thing, except instead of 0 it was 20, and every time I click ok, it goes up by 20. It's in hexadecimal too, if that's relevant. The Emulator itself is just black.

(Sorry if I'm annoying, but I haven't had much experience in this kind of thing, and I figure I may as well learn from people who have)

Snap! But the emulator goes white in my case. My setup is also different to yours AMD 64X2 4800, 4GIGS, Windows XP Pro, Radeon X850XT Platinum Pro.

I tried changing settings and plugins, but can not sole this problem. All other games I have run perfectly, no slow down or graphic problems. apart from Starwars Rogue Squadron where the graphics are missing in places. (not ment to work anyway)

Make sure that you have the latest RDB update from Project64's site and your ROM is good.

I already have the latest RDB update from Project64's site. The ROM I`m using shows up as being good when I test it.(Shows it as Paper Mario (E) (M4) [!]) It is a English ROM so don`t know if this could be the problem. Project64 does not say there is a problem using the English ROM. But I will see if I can get hold off a USA ROM to see if that makes any difference.

Another thing I noticed is if you use the infinite/max HP & FP cheat and try to use Mairo`s hammer attack the game crashes, even if you switch the cheat back of before hand.

Thanks for the help.

I suggest you try the (U) version. It runs faster and said version has never crashed on me. There's really no point in using PAL games unless you really really want a slower game + languages other than english.

I have now tried the (U) version and no more error. I did not know the (U) versions ran faster than the (E) versions, I`ve not had any problems with speed with the (E) versions, but will switch over to the (U) versions because it sounds like they work better and you can never be to fast. (Need for speed):bouncy:

All NTSC games run faster than their PAL counterparts; NTSC at 60fps, PAL at 50fps (well V/Is than fps really).

By changing the ROM I was using from the English version (E) to the USA version (U). Project64 gives problems when using the PaperMario (E) ROM.

Well, I tried using the US ROM and it didn't freeze after the cutscene! :) I switched back to the European ROM afterwards though, the US one was very laggy for some reason.

Anyway, the point is I can play Paper Mario now! :p Thanks for you help everyone!
