My girlfriend and I were thinking of something the other night. Where do some of the names of game systems come from? Meaning like the name Playstation, we all know it's a game system but like what does the name Playstation mean? I thought since you play games on it and it's a station it's something like that. But what about Dreamcast? Xbox? Genesis? Saturn?

Just break the words down and look them up in a dictionary for Playstation. Sega named a couple of things after planets eg. Saturn, Neptune. Xbox since it is a large X-shaped box. Dreamcast sort of implies you dreams coming into a reality. Doesn't take a media degree to figure it out.

True I understand it doesn't take a genius to figure it out, I just was looking for different opinions on what they thought each one stood for.

Microsoft just likes the letter X. ActiveX, DirectX, Xbox... yeah that's all i can think of.

I remember when people were 'ewwed' and 'aawwed' by snazzy names of stuff like "Turbo 7" graphics and "Ultra Amiga 3000". It's all marketing, trying to get the next eeww and awe.
