I some Matroska files that has H264 video @ 720p, and that's needs a lot of processing power to decode. My CPU has the power to do it, but since I have a 7600GS, I want it to use the hardware acceleration it offers. The files are MKV container files. Do you guys know where I have to start? I'm using FFDshow

AFAIK, ffdshow doesn't currently support hardware acceleration of H.264 decoding. I think the only companies to produce players/codecs that support nVidia's acceleration (PureVideo) are Cyberlink, Intervideo and Nero, all of which are unfortunately commercial. My information could be out-of-date though.

CoreAVC (though not free) is an excellent program to speed up H264 decoding. Though you should try to find 1.1 or earlier since later versions have activation crap built in.
But as far as hardware acceleration go, those abovementioned applications are the only ones I know of that does it.

Yes, CoreAVC is probably the best choice for H.264/AVC playback there is right now. Too bad it's a commercial product.

Perhaps it will be free in the future, if and when it goes open source. We shall see.
But it's not really expensive now either, so it isn't a bad choice, either...
