CD Burning problems

Recently my GF got a new computer:

P4 2ghz
SIS 645DX Mobo
512ram
XP Home inc. SP1
80 gig HD
SB Live
Radeon 8500
DVD Drive
CDRW Drive

The drives are located on IDE channels:

HD = IDE channel 1 primary master (UDMA 5)

DVD = Secondary Master (UDMA4)
CDRW = Secondary Slace (UDMA2)
Also note I have installed the latest version of the ASPI drivers from Adaptec.

For a while CDRs burned at maximum speed fine 32x (the buffer was also untouched), but just recently for some bizarre reason, Nero has been acting strangely, namely:

It works fine up until around 20% has been burned, then suddenly the CD buffer will constantly deplete, then fill back up again, constanly until the file has been burned. Luckily Justlink technology stops the CD becoming a coaster, but this business of constant buffer overuns is annoying, and slows the burn time down immensely.

Any ideas why this is happening? It has happened with several versions of Nero.

I've attached a log of one of Nero's burns, in case this helps diagnose the problems better.... me I'm at a complete loss :(

The only thing I can even think has caused this was AVG (Virus checker), for some reason it was stopping CDs from burning at the 16% mark everytime (even though background scan was disabled). Once I uninstalled AVG, all returned to normal, for a while at least.

The system has also been thoroughly scanned for viruses, spyware, trojans etc

Thanks in advance for any help on this, if you need anymore details, please ask.

Hmm... Well, 2 things come to mind:

1) This is a TAO burn, does it happen with DAO as well?

2) try defragmenting.

Have you tried re-installing Nero. Also check for firmware updates for the CDRW.

Thanks for the reply:

I will give you an answer to that tomorrow :) Will have to try it out.

>2) try defragmenting.

I don't think fragmentation would cause symptoms such as this, although it is a possiblity. Just tested the drive, it is 11% defragmented.

If the file is fragmented so badly that the hdd cannot supply info fast enough this might happen. Unlikely, but u never know :)

Yep, I reinstalled Nero several times (and with several versions).

After uninstalling I searched the drive (and registry) for any references to Ahead, and Nero (to make it as clean an install as I possibly could).... no luck with different versions of Nero though.

I upgraded to the latest firmware for the drive last night, again no difference.

It is worth mentioning that I currently use no AntiVirus software, and background tasks are at the bare minimum when burning.

If you can't solve the problem try the thing that lazy people like me hate to do: Format an reinstall all again
