Welcome to the world of DRM, aka Digital Restrictions Management!

You can try to turn off hardware rendering.
ATI has a file player that lets take pics from video files, but it only comes with ATI MMC.

Just disable Overlays, with them on all you will get is a blue or purple screen with a red dot saying where the image should be started at :p

Nothing to do with DRM. In windows media player, Tools/Options/Performance/Advanced (this hid it well, I must say that), and decheck "Use Overlays". Now you can take a screenshot by pressing prntscrn, then pasting it into paint or your favorite imaging program.

It depends on what you are trying to play, some files are tagged so that WMP will show a blank screen when you try to take a screenshot. RealOne has a similar feature. The MPAA is also realy anal about screenshots, and they require that DVD player software also does the same thing when playing a commercial DVD.

Use Media Player Classic. Once you have it, go to the Options window. Under "Output" in the "Playback" section, change "Video" to "Video Mixing Renderer (Renderless)". Alt-PrintScrn will now work, although video playback might be a bit slower.

Media Player Classic is an awesome little media player... It does everything WMP does, works better, and can play QuickTime and RealMedia movies if you have QuickTime or RealOne installed.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, if you have WinDVD or PowerDVD installed, it can play DVDs, too.
