What's new

can't burn cd's

Hexidecimal

Emutalk Bounty Hunter.
It couls be possible you just got a bad drive. Seems you've tried everything, My suggestion at this point is to box it up, take it back to the store you purchased it from, and get a replacement.

In the device manager it says device type as DVD/CD-Rom

I haven't worked with W2k enough to help you there... but that's the problem... W2k doesn't see it as CD-RW, so no software will either... maybe try to reinstall it and see what drivers W2k loads again (afterwards if it still doesn't work see if you can force new drivers in device manager....).

I had this problem (in XP) try seeing if these steps help:

1. Go to >Start>Run type Regedit and click OK.
2. Now click on the + signs for each of the paths as listed below and
then follow the branch the next one:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD
Burning\Drives
3. Then click on the yellow folder icon for: Volume{misc numbers
listed here}
Note: If you have more than one CD/DVD drive it will be listed in the
order on your computer, i.e....Master/Slave.
4. In the right hand menu will be an item called Drive Type.
5. Right Click on this, select Modify and change the Dword value to 2
for CD-RW or 1 for CD-R.
6. Click OK and exit the Registry editor.
7. Re-Start Computer.
8. Right click on drive and select properties. Select the recording
tab and make sure the "Enable CD Recording on this drive" box is
checked.
9. Reopen Regedit, back to drives, and modify CurrentCDWriteSpeed to
your drives max speed, using Base decimal.
10. If it's available, change MaxCDWriteSpeed to your drives max
speed, using Base decimal.
NOTE: If 9&10 are not available, you can add them by creating a New
DWORD value.

You probably installed the Adaptec ASPI... that's why it works with Easy CD Creator and not with Nero. To get Nero to work you need the Nero ASPI. Just uninstall Nero and reinstall it... it should install the ASPI. Otherwise just get the Nero ASPI and install in manually.
