Can some program do this?

I am just wondering if there is such a program that can tell you if someone is trying to ring you while you are on the internet. I am currently stuck on 56k, and my parents are getting annoyed at all the phone calls they are missing, any suggestions guys?

i need the same i think i found a thing called callwave but i think it sucks! im not sure i havent tried yet but i was wondering about the same thing all callwave does is take a message of missed calles like a call answer service would.

pretty much you would need is call waiting on your phone line and a modem with call waiting capabilities. they usually come bundled with some software that pops up in your face when someone tries to call.

you could enable call waiting for your phoneline (consult your provider), and the beeps that signal a new incoming call should disconnect the modem in some time. that's what i did. a bit annoying though, but you'll get your calls. you have to tell your friends to ring a lot when they call ^^

Yeah! I need a program like that too! That beeps disconnect the modem only sometimes, and my modem bundled software doesnt' offer me anything for this.

No, you dont need call waiting. Call waiting will crash you connection, if you have it use the *70 code when dialing through the computer to disable it. Callwave uses call redirecting. You can sign up for it with your phone company and if a call comes for you, it is redirected to Callwave which leaves a message for you. However while your using it the stupid ad has to remain open on your desktop or it is not free.

check your Dialing properties (Control Panel). There is a check box towards the middle that says, "To Disable Call Waiting, Dial:", check that and enter *70 into the box next to it. from now on the modem will dial *70 to disable call waiting first, then dial to the net.

i know the new aol has a popup thing that tells you have a call.

but im not getting aol for that crap i wouldnt get aol for anything yuck.

I like it, but cant use it myself cuz of the phone company. but here is how it works. go to the site and download it. it is a very quick download. after it installs it will give a demo call. then you can sign up and everything. now you will need to set some stuff up with the phone company, but they tell you how. what happens is when someone calls, instead of reaching a busy signal, they get directed to the callwave 1-800 # and they leave a message. when they leave it, the callwave program will ring and play the message. then you decide to go offline and call back, or leave it alone.

I actually prefer using the phone company's Voicemail service. works in the same way except nothing on the computer associates with it. maybe they will do something like that in the future.

Do a google search for "call waiting modem" or "call waiting box", either of those should be adequate for what you want.

I would just get a broadband connection and not worry about it though.

Well, sorry, but most of us dont have the money or even have broadband in our area. I do, but not making the money to afford it.

Speaking of broadand, anyone know the usual price for ISDN? Cuz, I would even go with that if it was 24/7 and allowed me to use the phone while online.

dsl users spend ~$60 a month for ~256k-1mbit

cable users spend ~$35 a month for ~3mbit, which is ~twice as fast as a T1.

If you have the same option as I do, and you can't afford $35 a month, you are seriously living in poverty

i will research this more when i get some friggin roomates, and a house.... but alpha wolf what company do you run through? is it local or a national company? im in L.A. County and everything is expensive...i know cox cable is cheap but there a local sandiego company.so i cant get it

i used <a href=http://www.internetcallmanager.com>internet call manager</a> when i had my 33.6. Cost me $5 a month but was worth it. i never had to disconnect (although you have the option) i always used the pre-recorded messages "i'll call you back" etc. Don't know anything about callwave... is it newer?

whoa AlphaWolf, DSL costs $60 where you are?? holy smokes. here DSL and cable are competing penny for penny... both are $45 canadian a month, which is < $30 US a month.

Most of us chose cable (like me), but a lot of newer broadband converts get DSL. i hear they get better upload speeds too (i get 12 KB/s UL, bah)

yeah, DSL costs up the ass here. The reason why is because the phone company adds extra charges (usualy $20) simply because of the fact that you intend to use the line for DSL, then the ISP fee ranges from $20 to $40 a month, so it can easily get up to $60. Fortunately DSL isn't the only deal in town, plus the cheaper alternative is a lot faster.

The subscriber rate is 7 cable modem users for every 3 DSL users, and theres only one cable provider. Fortunately they don't take advantage of their monopoly at all...yet...

I can easiliy pay $35 por a cable servirce. However whwere I live you can only get connected with a 56k Modem. There's no another option.
