Hey all, don't worry I am not gonna ask for roms.
Just wondering, if you don't want people to ask for roms, why not make some sort of newbie guide "how to get roms in 165 steps"?
Roms are not that easy to get, and let's be honest we all have them, so what's this hysterical harshness about?
I thought the goal was to keep it legal, not to make it hard to get into the N64 community...
Without them the whole emulation scene would be pointless, but the search for them often only leads to porn, viruses and being banned.
I am not saying you should change the rules, but maybe some sort of faq about where people usually try to find them would be handy for a lot of people.
Of course this is a suggestion and probably a very stupid one, it just seems a little bit strange to me, these moderators with 500+ roms on their computer, telling new members to stfu about roms. (easy for them to say)

The thing is, roms are incredibly simple to find. They were back when I started, and they still are now...

Really if people want to find them, they should use their own initiative :) It genuinely isn't tough should you use a little nous.

Wrong forum, moving.

And this issue has been discussed hundreds of times. Emulation is legal, roms are not. This "hysterical harshness" you are talking about I don't agree with, because if people just follow our rules we're not harsh to them. We're a loving community. :)

Half filled with scandinavians.. which may explain a thing or two :p I think marty is on prosac.. wait, wrong thread :p

Well, if we made a guide on how to find them that would be in the very grey area, so what are you really suggesting? Keep it legal AND offer roms?

Roms are extremely easy to find nowadays, even more easy than before. And no, we don't have any magic place or so where we get all the roms we need...not that isn't open for everyone anyways.

Besides the fact that they are easy to find, we like to keep this board at a certain level of intellectuality (that I can't possibly have spelt right? :p). If we had free roms discussion, the complete idiots that we see all day who break our rules and ask for roms, would actually stay here and use this forum. If such a day comes I will certainly not be here.

So, it just ain't going to happen. If you have to browse through hundreds of porn banners to get the roms, that is not our problem. Not to mention you might be looking at the wrong place...

We will never have ROM links... ever.

'Tis illegal you know. Whether you want to break the law or not is your choice, but here on this site we abide by the law. There is a site with the complete GoodN64 set on it. You are not even looking!

I've often wondered if people like Jakko assume the "elite" members of the board have secret meetings where we discuss the latest rom links. How else could we possibly acquire our "500+ roms."

I found them the same way everyone else is expected to. I waded through 1000s of porn ads, Top 50 sites, and other dead ends before finding what I was looking for. I will give one tiny hint though...rom sites are increasingly hard to find, but roms are not. Use that information wisely.

p.s. If anyone PMs me asking for clarification, I'll ban you.

Hahaha, secret rommeetings for elite community members, that's a good one.
Thx for the normal answers b t w, I first thought my post was deleted, but I wasn't really looking.

@ Trotter: I do not think n64 roms are easy to find at all, and I spent quite a lot of time on google and closing 129 porn pop-ups. In the end the only way for me to get them, was by using kazaa. (or similar p2p software)

@ Gorxon: Offering roms is something else then making a sticky post that explains why there can be no links on the site, and that irc channel X or p2p program X can best be used in the search for roms.
I am not sure wether everyone understands/knows about the emu = legal, rom = illegal paradox.

@ Clements: I think few members of this community abide by the law in theory, but I understand what you're saying.

I guess it's just a flaw on my side, making hard to understand where is the line between putting stuff online for backup purposes, or putting it online for distribution purposes. If it's always illegal, then why do many sites even bother with the "you must own the original game" disclaimers?
Ah well, thx for your answers all, it cleared most up for me.

Niggy G your post went the wrong path too. You're pretty verbose.

What exactly do you mean?

After using a thesaurus, you either think im over the top, i.e I shouldn't of hinted at how to get roms.

Or you think my english is crap and I ramble on without getting to the point.

Either way, ive edited my post and yes my english is poor.
