Better performance?

What's the best way to boost the speed of my cpu without overclocking (or purchasing a new cpu :p )? I've tried changing the priority already but it didn't help much.

Back to the question....

The only other ways you can boost the general speed of the system is by ensuring you have drivers installed for all items that need them. Without overclocking there is nothing you can really do to boost raw CPU speed. Tweaking the OS etc can help eek out extra performance, as can setting the BIOS up the right way, with agressive options.

There are two suggestions I always give to people who want to see shit run faster, first is to get rid of antivirus software that does the 24/7 scan crap (if you are paranoid about getting a virus, make it only scan a file when you download it), and disable unnecessary services.

1. Scandisc - can get rid of errors, which may speed up your hard drives
2. Defragment your hard disc - Speeds up your hard drive
3. Format you hard disc - May sound silly, but this really improves performence
4. Keep your drivers/BIOS/Direct X up to date - helps fix bugs and may speed up performence
5. Scan for viruses/spyware - Both can speed up your computer if u have a virus
6. Use an operating system that is gr8 for performence - I Reccommend Windows XP for 1Ghz or more, otherwise use any other OS
7. Overclock your graphics card, helps performence greatly
8. Tweak your OS www.tweakxp.com

If these aint good enough, overclock, its the best way if you dont want to buy a new system, but i'd reccomend an upgrade

I don't recommend downloading tweakxp, unless you want to risk formatting windows.

:)

ugh i hate it when ppl get confused between the two... this isnt the official site for tweakXP, its just a page for windows XP tips to improve performence

Do not download or run any tweak utilities. They are all just clones of each other, and more often than not, their tweak configurations only make you think your shit is running faster. (e.g. by adjusting the menu popup speeds, which only makes the menus faster, and nothing else)

The only exception to this would be microsofts own tweakui if you don't use a custom shell.

I haven't seen this documented anywhere before, but I found that you can disable the Windows Help service and the Automatic Update service by modifying these values to anything besides what they currently are respectively:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv\Parameters\ServiceDll
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\helpsvc\Parameters\ServiceDll

Normaly its impossible to completely disable these services, but I find them to be a waste (sometimes when the help service has to load, it can make you wait a while to populate a shitload of compiled HTML documents). Note that disabling the help service will break a few programs, such as msinfo32 (which I never use). The reason I disable the automatic update service, is because it's designed so that microsoft can update the DRM components of media player without giving you any notice (I am not kidding about this, read the EULA you agreed to), which quite frankly, I would rather opt out of, plus I don't want that extra 30k of memory being used up, nor an unexpected spike during a game of NS :D

You can either do that, or just make it point to a different (fake) filename. (which is what I would do)
