Best Input Controller?

I'm curious about purchasing a controller to play with since the keyboard setup just irritates me. What tends to be the easiest to use/setup with pj64? Any recommendations would be great!

Thanks.

There are special hubs that you plug into your USB ports that allow you to connect N64 controllers to your pc and use them as USB gamepads. First place that comes to mind that offers these things is Lik-Sang.com. They seem to work perfectly.

Adaptoid + n64 controller is 'the best' but if not there are other controllers that are popular - some people use PS1/2 controllers for it or I forget the model but I believe it was a controller made by Saitek, try searching the forums?

I second Adaptoid. I got it new (at least i think it was new) on Ebay for $25. Try not to pay more than $30, or $45 at most. I've seen some places, again also on Ebay that sell it for up to $70. It's good, but it's not THAT good. Well maybe it is, but at the core, it's still just several hundred KB of driver and general circiutry

Works great, no major problems. All other issues I was able to solve on my own or by checking out the Adaptoid's website. Install driver, plug controller into PC via Adaptoid, plug in Rumble Pack, and all was and still is great.

Some of the nice features of Adaptoid as advertised are full expansion support (memory pack, rumble pack, and those DD64 expansion material?), good support for 3rd party controllers, and ease of use. Can't speak for the 3rd party controllers, but the other 2 are true

A modified Xbox pad isnt bad either, though the original one is better than the s as the positions of the black & white butttons make them easy to use as part of the c buttons, just replace or add a usb connector to the end of it get the drivers & away you go. Possibly not for everyone but I got a cheap spare pad so I figured why not try it? works quite well for me

But I hear that requires soldering a XB controller to a USB plug end doesn't it? Not every1 will be able to do that let alone have the equipment to so.

There are adapters for xbox controllers to be plugged into the PC, lik-sang sells them i believe.

oh, I didn't quite get what hawq meant by "modified Xbox pad", and still don't. But on 2nd reading, he did say replace or add a USB connection. The latter is definately the choice to go for those who don't want to solder, as u just buy one of those controller to USB converter devices.

Well yes a converter would suit some, but for those with a soldering iron its a case of matchin colours on the wires since the Xbox pads are modified usb ones anyway, then getting the driver for it. I do admit though that some may not want to go that route, just threw it in as a possibility for those that are curious about it.

I use a PC gamepad that emulates the ps2 pad, quite nice and cheap too.
EDIT: it is the TopWay Double Shock.

I have a Piranha [extreme] USB controller that works wonderfully.

Me and my BF saw these and bought three immediately, just to have a spare in case it was good (they were €10 apiece).

It has all the buttons you need for N64 emulation, and a few spare ones.

The only downside is, it's nearly impossible to find a shop that sells them regularly... It's always a limited time offer: when they're out, they don't get new ones. If you happen to run into one, buy it!

Honestly I am very picky when it comes to the controller.
To make an example, in order to play mame games"the way they where ment to be played" I cashed out 150 USD to get an X Arcade controller, and if I may ,it was well spent money !!
But for the N64 emulation at first I used a PS2 dualshock controller , which was connected to my PC via an adaptor called PC Magic Box( around 14-15USD) from link-sang.com, but as you all know the analog function of the dualshock is nowhere close to the feel of the original N64 Controller, plus it's a little tough to map all the buttons, because the right analog stick doesn't exactly replace well the C-buttons.
I got eventually another adaptor, still from link-sang, called Trio Linker Plus($19 I believe), and it works with DC,PS2 and Game Cube controllers plus other peripherals like official steering wheels and dance mat,and it supports the RUMBLE feature!!
I have to say I am really satisfied with the GC controller, it's very responsive, just as sensitive as the original N64 one, and plus the buttons layout adapts very well to emulate all the buttons required.
If you already happen to have a GC controller in your house, then you can't beat this set-up !!

Personally I use a GC to USB adapter: Super Joybox 13

Supports the rumble feature, easy to install. Perfect for when I am using PJ64, Dolphin, Chankast and even a few other systems. I also own a PS to USB adapter, but use that mainly just for PS2 and PS1 emulation at the moment, though it does get used in a variety of PC games etc.

Nothing like having a decent controller with rumble to add alittle extra to the gaming experience.

Viva la PJ64!
I prefer xbox if you cant get a n64 adapter which if you can get xbox you can get the latter. Anyway, the only thing bad regarding the xbox is that z as to go on black or the right joystick...can be a pain with some games like roadrash...but most work very well with the xbox controller...original...with white and black on top.

My Z is set up for the left trigger, much more natural, its the C buttons that are tricky unless you have a pad layout like the original xbox pad in my mind, if the pads like an 's' with the black & white under the main ones you end up tryin to use the right stick, fortuantly the Eva game doesnt use all the C buttons often so I just reconfigure to suit the stage on that one, for others like Mario though the right stick does fine. Most games dont use both shoulder buttons anyway so just set Z to the left trigger & all becomes more natural & easy feeling
