I dont have an answer to your question but this thread should probably go to techtalk :)

Please read what forum you are posting in, this has nothing to do with programing unless you are asking how to write a DOS device driver. As for a DOS device driver you should be able to execute some VXD (virtual device drivers) in windows command prompt only mode. It's still windows just with only a command prompt.

Connectix Virtual PC for Windows can handle virtual drives, but it is some kind of 'dos' emulator.

I've never heard of such program. But I guess it wouldn't be too dificult to write DOS TRS program which reads the ISO from disk and simulates normal drive. There is for example the NTFS driver for DOS which simply wraps the dos drive access interrupt to provide drive letters for NTFS drives...

If you have connected the DOS PC to your home network, and you have another PC running windows, you could use Alcohol 120% or Daemon tools to make this ISO as windows drive and then share it, then just map the shared drive in DOS using some software such as LanMAN.

You can also run DOS in VMWare or Connectix Virtual PC (now owned by microsoft, I doubt you can get Virtual PC anymore). Both of those support mapping ISO file as CD-rom drive in emulated PC.

I prey, not pray.
If your intention is for gaming, then the best program to use is DOSBox. It perfectly simulates the old legacy hardware environments that should be needed for just about anything, and it does a better job than vmware/vpc in terms of compatibility and speed.

I have such program but it can only mount it's own proprietary images, but it includes utility for creating such images.
Only problem. I can't find it in my DOS software database so it must be on one of 200 cds with unsorted soft, hard to find as i don't remember name.

I'll try to find it but use google, as i found it that way :)

About virtual HD driver. Never heard about one for dos except Norton Discreet - PGPDisk's grandfather for DOS :) It can make encrypted drives limited only to 2GB in size, limited only to letter "Z" in quantity but i'm pretty sure, secure virtual HD is not the thing you looking for :D

Really ? Last time i've messed with DOSBox it was slow as hell and buggy as Windows 0.001 alpha. Virtual PC works much better.

As far as I know, DOSBox doesn't support any 32-bit DOS apps, and it's limited to only VGA modes, which means DOS programs relying on VESA standard for high- color and resolution video modes doesn't work either.

I'm not saying DOSBox would be bad either, it's probably ideal for running 16-bit classics such as commander keen series. But it still needs to develop a lot to run games like Quake or DukeNukem3D with full frame-rate and sound.

I think Virtual PC 5.2 has excellent support for DOS games: full emulation of SoundBlaster (including FM/OPL2 synth) and VESA 2.0 compliant video (hardware accelerated through your real video card).

If you are thinking to install operating system from this kind of virtual CD-rom drive, you should know that this works only for operating systems that leave the DOS still running in the backround. You can install Windows 3.1,95,98 (and probably even Windows ME) from emulated DOS drive, just like you can use DOS's NTFS driver in Windows 98/95 if you have loaded it before booting Windows 98.

However installing Windows XP,2000 or NT wont work because their installation is performed in non-DOS environment (although it looks like DOS, but it's actually 32-bit text based mode).

Kinda stupid idea to install Windows (any) from virtual cdrom ? Why just not to copy distributive from CD or another computer (serial (slow), parallel or usb (these two much faster) link) ?

I just said that in case he's going to do it.

I don't see anything stupid in it though, I remember the time when I didn't have CD-RW drive and I couldn't burn any ISOs. And reading data from harddisk instead real optical cd disc can be even 100 times faster.

Huh. It's nothing stupid in using virtual drives but windows distributive can be simply copied to hdd and installed from. You can even from network...
So using ISO + CD emulator just for installing windows is waste of disk space and time
