What's new

Another dreaded video card thread.

Yeah, I know this is most likely going to spark a 6 page arguement between the fan boys/girls, but I am buying a new video card in about 3 weeks, and It will most likely be the ATI RADEON 9800 SE 128, (lookie lookie) I like this card, it does everything i want it to do at a good price, the only down side i can find is the fact it uses 4 rendering pipelines instead of 8, but I figure i'll live, you people seem to have a bit better grasp of what's what in the hardware world, I'd like some opinions on this car and possibly some suggestions for something equaly as good for the same price, (and the 9600 line is out). Thanks in advance.

Sure the Radeon 9800 is a great card, but I'm just not sure you want to spend all that money on something that's going to give you minimal improvement in most current games. For N64 emulation you probably won't see any improvement because that system should already be running everything at 100%. I have a friend with a similar P4 system and a Geforce 4 MX and everything runs fine on it, so unless you're having problems you might not want to spend the money. Now if you eventually get Doom3 and Halflife 2 and everything's running in slow motion, then it's time to upgrade... and the card will be cheaper then.

Yeah, the price steadily drops a couple bucks a day, and im a little less worried about N64 emulation and more worried about graphic intensive games like Doom 3, i want something thats going to support DX9 and OGL 2.0, and this is a good price, on what looks like a good card, and I refuse to buy anything from the nvidia FX line.

?????????????????????????
Yea this seems like a good all-around card for a good price :)
I'm not a fan of nvidia's newest fx series but if you're set up about using a raedon card, hey why stop you? Not that I would, hehe.
Good or not, it'll do. For now ;)

Hrmm, that's interesting, I have Half Life here, (I'm pretty sure half life is now mailed to you when you're born =P) But I can't say that would affect me, because honestly I'm not that big a halflife fan, (guess i never found a good mod)

IMHO, that's probably your best option, because all other 9800 cards are much more expensive, other than the original 9800. Might look for a review though just for your own safety. But first impression says go for it.

And yet you are not pissed at NVIDIA for the bucket loads of shit they have pulled lately? Hell I'd post some links but I would take up a few pages with them :p

Get yourself a 9600 Pro AIW :matrix:

Let the flame war about card dedication begin, and I refuse to buy the 9600 series of cards. Just, no, won't do it.

guru3d.com had a nice review of the new nvidia cards
the 5700 ultra looks really nice as far as price/performance

Why? The 9600 wipes the floor with its competition and I have heard the AIW performs up to the 9700 pro level. Besides a flame war won't break out, and I'm also in a position to know quite a bit about NVIDIA ;)

Becasue I have heard about the hardware on the 9600 and the problems with it.

I've heard nothing but good things about the 9600 Pro, even on a NVIDIA community.

Well, people are reporting 40fps with a 9800 in HL, whereas a geforce 2 go can get 100 (probably more, but 100 is the max).

And also I never said I liked nvidia any better. The only thing I like about nvidia is that they don't just randomly drop support for the old games.

Well, I take back what I said about not being a half-life fan, I tinkered with the Earth Special Forces mod, which made me a fan.

I would hold off on buying the 9800se's if your looking for Dx9/PS2.0 performance. With only 4 pipelines compared to the 8 pipes of a regular 9800 non pro, it's not gonna perform nearly as well as it's 8 pipe counterparts in Dx9/ps2 games.

I know the performance would be maximum with 4 pipelines, but i cant afford 200+ bucks for the card, Like i said in my first post, the only real downside to this card is the 4 pipelines.

Try and find a 9500 Pro.

They still have 8 pipes and are pretty inexpensive. =)

I speak from experience that the 9500 Pro is one great card. *see system stats*
