TOKYO (AP) — Nintendo said Sunday it is seriously considering abandoning the United States production of its Gamecube video-game machine.
"We must admit that stopping the production of the hardware in the United States is an option we are looking into," said Hiroshi Yamauchi, Nintendo President of Japan. "We need more time to make a decision, and we will announce it then."
He would not say when the announcement was expected. Analysts say concentrating Nintendo's business on handheld games and on Gamecube in Japan makes sense and could help reverse the fortunes of the company, which has been losing money in the United States since Nintendo 64 (which catered to a prodominantly younger audience.)
The idea that Nintendo should give up making consoles in America has been around for some time. Making games for the Game Boy Advance alone in the U.S. is positive for Nintendo. Nintendo is strong on developing handheld games and accessorys.
Wow could this be true?
