I find it amusing to say the least when I see how ppl get attached to what really must be complete strangers to them, a bunch of names on a short list. Why would you trust someone after half an hour of talk, give or take a month ;) ? What is this trust based on? How often have you been lied to in real life? What ist hte likelihood of this happening with a non-entity over the internet (let's face it, if I sent you a picture of my gay room-mate and told yoit was my father you wouldn't be able to know the difference :p) Just wondering because eg. I've noticed how eagerly some ppl will jump to someone else's defense, barely knowing the context of the argument. Kinda like a reflex.
It's just that when I was a teen and apart from some phone and bbs there was no www, no irc/messenger buddies etc. you either had friends for whom, if need be, you'd get your teeth kicked in, or you didn't.

I defend alot of people, I may have never met them face to face, but you can grow a trust with people even you have never being the same room with them.

How I've found this to work is how people keep their word, and the quality of work that they provide. Also after spending hours with most of these people on chat rooms you can catch them in lies, and further analize that personality through how they speak to the channel.

Anyways... yea I don't have anything else...

yup it does suck. yet another word in the so-called internet age that ppl who have no clue about stuff (not meaning jaz here, i mean sucky pop bands and advertisers for the main part) use to make it sound "new-age" (or whatever). reminds me of using "@" in words to make it look "cyber" (or whatever).

/me goes back to bed

Sure, after so and so many hours of online conversation eventually you _should_ be able to judge a person's credibility, but what I meant was people who I see not only crawl up someone's ass but on top of that turn around and defend the entrance, if you catch my drift ;). No chatroom could make me do that. But maybe I ain't been to the right ones yet?!!? LOL :D Anyway, just a thing I'll have to deal with, I guess.

The one person I`ve ever met on a chat room and stayed in touch with, I met the very first time I went on (and also the first time she`d been on either). This is a little over two years ago as of about a month, and I`d have to say I trust her more than a lot of the people I know and see day to day which is surprising to say the least. You just have to watch for people contradicting themselves, ask them about family and everything else you can think of, watch for unexpected reactions, things they`ve mentioned before and just generally remember a lot of things they tell you and try see if you catch them out subtly... it`d take someone very smart and frankly very sad to play a trick like that for too long without messing up somehow. Pictures are a good source of proof and just be suspicious of any that look too "professional" (e.g. scanned pictures which aren`t exactly well cropped are more likely to be genuine from an average computer user). The first picture I ever saw of my friend was actually a really good one for this sort of thing; a basic scan of her school i.d. card about 3 months after (USA here)... her full name, d.o.b., the school and especially town are pretty obscure (yes, checking little details like that using the net helps a lot) and the description matched, as did every subsequent picture I ever had from her. And the most effective other way (webcam aside)? Strangely voice emails work quite well as you can accent/age judge quite well from those. Takes a long time but yes, it is possible to become attached to someone who is just a name on a list... because after that long they aren`t just a name on a list. If you know for certain what someone looks like, sounds like, and just about everything that`s going on in their life, whats the difference between that and anyone else you know?

I`d like you to introduce you to... my `internet girlfriend`! At least according to her chat-room photo this is her. ;)

And her sister apparently! Isn`t it amazing how many cute girls are on chat rooms and single?! ;)

(Okay, guess-the-celeb contest here. She`s obviously a musical genius...)
