What's new

Why are newer versions slower for me?

I still use R126. If I use a newer one, like R490, I have an FPS drop. When dueling in SSBM, I have a very nice FPS of 33 in R126 (not noticable it's a bit too high). In newer versions (dunno if there are exceptions though, but I've tried a newer version several times) this drops to 25 (and it is noticable it's slower). How come? I mean, I keep seeing people talking about Dolhpin becoming faster every time, but it's becoming slower at me!

I use the exact same plugins (including an updated plugin if that's the case, but the name is the same), and the exact same settings (this includes turning Dual-Core and Dynareg on). Double-checked. I don't think it's my computer, as else I would've had lower FPS in R126 to start with.

P.s. (please only answer this if the answer's "yes", as I think it's still "no" and then this question is unnecesary): is there a plug-in that can continue playing the SSBM music? (so I'm not talking about sounds, but about the music)

See what Federali said for the simple answer.

Every time one changes a program it effects something else. Sometimes to support something it comes at the price of perceived performance. Adding any feature has an up and a down side. A simple example is let us say the hardware is supposed to insert wait states when there is access certain areas of memory. A wait state halts the CPU (IE during read/write access) so that other hardware can 'catch up'. Emulating this correctly WILL slow things down. Simple example and very real.

Yes, it's logical that new features slow down the emulator indeed. However, like I said, people are saying the newer versions are faster, while the opposite is true at me. That's what I find weird.

Especially since I've seen people with -lower system specs- that run SSBM on 30+ FPS on the new versions (and my GFX options are are pretty low: No antialias, and a resolution of only 640x480 (since I use 800x600 on my computer. My screen's kinda bad and makes 1024x768+ a pain to look at, in case anyone wonders why). And I hardly run anything on the background (only the essentials).

Yup same here. You are not the only one. Missing like 6 fps in the new versions

They are using the optimized for nvidea ogl plugin...

You must be an Ati user like me?

I am using Nvidia, but I never tried OGL because it wasn't a good plugin in the earlier versions. I used it now to see how much it has improved, and although it worked nicely now, I'm actually getting lower FPS than the DX9 plugin (it ranges between 30-33 now, instead of staying around 33). But that could simply be because it's trying to hold it around 30 (but I prefer a steady +3 FPS over an always-changing +0/+3 FPS).

It fixes the black surface bug in SSBM though, which immediately puts it above the DX9 plugin IMO. Thanks for letting me know about OGL. I'll try it with R490 (unless there's a newer download now) tomorrow (I don't have the time now).

EDIT: well, I couldn't hold myself testing Mario Party 4 (on the R126 still), which was absolutely unplayable with the DX9 plugin. 10fps on boards or something, and the intro took several minutes. Now with the OGL plugin, altough the intro was still pretty slow (6fps, a major boost though), the board I playtested ran at 28-30 fps which was perfect. And then the mini-game, it had graphics enough to test the speed of the OGL plugin, and the test was succesful (38, even too high!). So the DX9 plugin was the cause of slowing down Dolphin indeed :)

open the dolphin.ini and manually change some things to tweak the performance.

Try going between dualcore = false/true
Throttle = false/true (this might bring the framerate up to 33)
optimisequantizers = false/true

Also open the opengl.ini file and change dloptimise = 1

Voted Least Likely to Succeed
Keep in mind that the DirectX plugin may, in some cases, give better FPS. But the OpenGL plugin is the best plugin to use simply for accuracy of emulation. Given Dolphin used to run at about 5 FPS, I'll settle for anything better than that, and if it's accurate, all the better.

And this just makes me sad because I have an ATI card aha.
Am I really missing out that badly? *Boohoo*

The latest revisions seem back to the speed of the earlier ones now :)

For me at least ;)
