Slow emulation

I'm using Project64 to play my own dumped roms on my PC with the following specs:
Intel Core2Duo E6600 2.4Ghz
2GB Dual-Channel Ram
nVidia 7900GT
500Gb Data 7200k hard drive and 36Gb 10k raptor (for O/S)
Windows Vista Home Premium X64

I'm using default plugins apart from the controller, which I use N-Rage. Everythings fine but the emulation is slow, it's very annoying! Donkey Kong 64 and Mario 64 are stuck at 25Fps, Both Zelda's run at 17fps (Apart from menu screens and the beginning where it says 'Nintendo' in 3D). Goldeneye varies from 10fps up to 50fps. What's going on? Playstation emulation on my PC is fine and my pc is more than capable of handling N64 games @ 1080/50/p. Any ideas? I'm playing the games via my 55" 1080p HD telly (DVI-HDMI) and was hoping to use high-res texture pack, but if I'm getting 17fps with the low-res I dread to see what I'll get with the high-res.

BTW: Frame rate shown via FRAPS

I dump the games on my old Windows 98SE machine with a Doctor V64Jr and WJrread.

The frame rate is hard-coded into most games. For the moment, AFAIK, there's not a lot you can do to change it. On the bright side, you should be able to use the hi-res packs without worsening things.

on my computer i have to use lower resolutions to get full speed, see if setting
the resolution lower gets you better fps.

So it's supposed to run at 17Fps? I can't play it at that speed, it's far to slow for me! Movements are jerky :(. Anyway to bypass the frame rate set by the rom?

What you're seeing is normal; exactly as it was on the console. There's no way to change it.

IIRC, the NTSC (US) version of Zelda runs at a slightly higher frame rate than the PAL (E) version, so if you're using the European one, try the US one and see if it's more acceptable.

BTW, is the forum acting kinda funny? A little bit ago I posted a message and it tried to submit the message twice in a row, and I've noticed lots of double posts today.

Allnatural, something is wrong with his setup somewhere, because if it's as slow as he's saying on the console then the N64 would never have been successful.

Now, I have essentially the same rig as you, except you have a somewhat better video card, and I have XP. Games play at very decent speeds for me, usually. I blame Vista.

I suggest you try the aforementioned games as a test and see if your system is faster. Better to know if it's a game limitation or an emulation limitation. There are several games that have such problems reportedly. So it's not too much of a stretch that he may have picked them. If I remember correctly a number of games are limited to 25 and 30fps some to 15 fps, by design I might point out. This is to get as much out of the N64 as possible (believe it or not).

Believe it. Zelda only runs at 20 fps on NTSC and 16-17 fps on PAL. Jerky and annoying when compared with today's games, but not too bad for ten years ago when viewed on a television. The 50 or 60 "FPS" you see in the corner of PJ64 do not actually refer to the number of times the image on the screen changes per second, but to the number of vertical interrupts per second. Now, if the game is running too slow (not too jerky) then there may be a problem that can be fixed, but otherwise it's just the way the game was designed.

Precisely. Bottom line is, if the FPS (VI/s) counter in the PJ64 window reads 60 (50 pal) then the game is running at the correct speed.

very few games run at 60FPS, on the N64.

anyway

Golden Eye is actually slow on the Console, the only way to fix that is to 'overclock' the console.

That's unfortunately typical for Goldeneye 007.
At least your processor shall be able to handle it.

Is there any way to override the set frame rate? It's really put me off playing Zelda as slow frame rates really put me off a game which is a shame as I'm dieing to play both the Zelda's :( .

some games do actually run at 60fps, though its not an actual set frame rate. these are usually Variable FPS games.
