What's new

I'm pretty sure mostly no one in here knows about that.

I was looking around for (I don't even recall what) at school and I felt on a website with comparison of the Sonic 2 Beta and the Sonic 2 Final. For fun, I went to check to see if there was anything "new" that I didn't know about those 2.... but to my surprise, I see a THIRD version... an early prototype.

I'll just inform you all about this version, stuff that were cut out, that no one ever saw and so.

NOTE: I won't give info about where to get the game NOR send it to anyone via PM/irc/msn/etc. It's on the web, find it if you want to try it.

-----------------------
FIRST OF ALL
-----------------------

Why is this called an early prototype? Well mainly because most of it's base is still over Sonic 1. All the musics, the level select and names are from Sonic 1 including most animations and even most levels data.

-----------------------
What's in that version?
-----------------------

S2_EP_1.jpg

This version only includes 1 fully playable level, there's a LOT of left overs from Sonic 1, there's some stuff from 3 other Sonic 2 levels but those aren't really playable. If you play like that, you will be thrown to Emerald Hills and once both Acts are completed, you are thrown back to the Title Screen. Tails is present only in other levels, if you play the game correctly (well, what you can) he won't be there. He prolly got removed for that part since he wasn't completed. There will be an "extra" at the bottom with some nice little stuff.

-----------------------
Level Select and Debug
-----------------------

What would be a prototype without those? Of course these exist in that version. The first thing you'll notice is that the level select is the exact same as Sonic 1, with all Sonic 1 zone names. 1 different thing you can see is each zone as THREE acts, thing that didn't make it to the final (except Metropolis). All of the levels are playing their original specific music from Sonic 1.

-----------------------
Green Hills Zone
-----------------------

This is the fun part, those are all the left overs from the real zone but using part from what's left of itself and from Emerald Hills. The level is really a mess collision side, it's, I think, impossible to complete without debug mode. Altho you can finish Act 1 and 2.... Act 3 is always the Act 1 for all zones but empty (skipped).

-----------------------
Marble Zone
-----------------------

This is Chemical Plant using Marble's Music. The start of the map is quite similar to the final release but you can't really go far, the end isn't even done and when you reach it, it throws you back at the start. All 3 acts are the same but only the 1st one could be classed as "working".

-----------------------
Spring Yard Zone
-----------------------

This is where it's interesting... Hidden Palace (yet again). It's the exact same version as you can see on the normal Sonic 2 beta. Nothing really new here, only Act 1 is playable up to a point. Act 2 and 3 are same as 1 but empty.

Nintendo Zealot
Yes, and when you spindash or run into a wall at a high speed, Sonic falls back, revealing a set of sprites found in the other beta.

Not sure how you'd assume know one here knew of it, it's only the most awesome thing to come out in a long time. Also, why in god's name are you using that awful filter?

thx for ruining the rest of the post I would complete.... I wanted to post that part later on when I had time...

And I said that because there's prolly not a lot of persons that still checks for old game betas, thanks for taking it all down, it's not because you knew about it that I should shut up and no one else should know about it ...

Also, why in god's name are you using that awful filter?

and this is because I was playing on my TV (makes it look more "Authentic".

So you still play these Kids games?

Why must you troll? Everyone was a kid once and some played Sonic growing up. As an adult being able to play early versions of games you loved (still love?) as a kid is a novelty. Besides, just because a game is fun doesn't make it a "kids game."

PsyMan

Just Another Wacko ;)
Well... IMO the best Sonic games were the 2D ones. SEGA screwed everything since they started making 3D Sonic stuff (maybe excluding Sonic Adventure 1/2, Sonic R and Sonic 3D that were kinda mediocre but not as bad as the rest).

The best Sonic effort I've seen in the last few years is Sonic 1 Megamix and it's just a hack of old 2D Sonic games...
I'll let you check what I'm talking about, here are some videos of the hack in action:

The Sonic Advance series and Sonic Rush were kinda good efforts but still lack "that something" which made the previous Sonic titles so good... so yeah, I'm more interested in "kids games" than Shadow The Hedgehog with the guns and stuff... :p

I for one like beta releases. It's fun to see how a game progresses along from concept to finished product :)
