ATI 9600 PRO 256MB any good?

Only buy an X800 if you can get one that can be soft modded to X800 XT PE. I did this with mine, but prior to soft modding it, the thing may as well been a 9800 Pro. I was VERY disappointed with my initial purchase of it.

OK, I been looking around and I have found a 7300 GT for $150! Is that good value or what?

I don't want to spend any more than this. I just want a card that will support GL frame buffer effects and do the job reliably. I also saw a 5500 for $95 but that's a little too low end, I may as well get the 9600 Pro, though I won't as the 7300 GT looks like a better card. But is it?

Edit: BTW these are retail prices.

Those australian prices are quite expensive, you can get a 5500 for $30 US or so. You do the conversion

Yeah, I know. So much for living in the lucky country!

But my question is this: Is the 7300 GT any good?

The Geforce 7300GT fully supports OpenGL 2.0, so the framebuffer support is no problem at all. Performance-wise, it should be 100% fine if you are just intending to use it for N64 emulation (I'm not totally sure about actual video game performance, like with BF2, Oblivion etc.)

EDIT: As gokuss4, a Geforce 6600 should be fine. I use a Geforce 6600GT for all my coding and testing with the glide wrapper, and it is perfectly adequate for N64 emulation.

Are you saying the 6600 is better than the 7300 GT?

The funny thing is I've been quoted $235 for a GF 6600 25MB which is an utter rip off, that is why I thought the 7300 GT sounded such a good bargain for $150. Also there were some positive reviews for the 7300 GT which said it was alot better than lower end Nvidia cards which I assume the 6600 falls in.

I would have prefered to go higher and get the 7600 GT but sadly they're atleast $420 - yes it's ridiculous!

And I won't use eBay, even though it may be cheaper cos:

1. I don't have an account.
2. I want the card now, not next week (Though I might have to) ...next month.
3. I don't trust paying someone I don't know for something I haven't seen or got yet.
4. And who says it will be cheaper after you've bid for it? You may come out twenty bucks cheaper and be disapointed with the quality of the product.

Anyway, I guess I'll have to still look around before I make a decision and every day it's getting harder to find an AGP card for a realistic price which really sucks cos I only had my computer for 2 years and everything now is changing.

No, you have it all around your backfoot.
7300 is low-end. 7600 is middle end. 7800 is high end.
6600 is middle end.

I'm really going to try and find a good graphics chart (or make a new one) to see the difference between all the cards. You're not the only one who is confused about all the cards.

Whoops, sorry, so I did.

But I read this review and it said the Inno3D 7300 GT GDRR3 (500MHZ) when clocked actually beat the 6600 GT! Even the stock DDR2 7300 GT (400MHZ) gave the 6600 GT and other mid end cards a run for it's money and for a low end card is quite good value even though it's underated.

I don't want you to get any wrong ideas... 6600GT is more pricier than the plain 6600. But whatever fits your budget... you can use the chart above to see what card to get that you find within a reasonable price.

Yeah. I guess anything would be better than a mouldy 4MX!

Thanks for the chart. It helped put things in perspective.
