Why is it not possible to collect money in the first Castlevania?

Game: Castlevania (V1.0) (U) [!].

Problem: in the top right corner of the screen you can see something like that: GOLD - - - - - . And if you pick up a bag with gold it doesn't change.

P.S. Legacy of Darkness runs fine...
