What HDD do you have?
If it's damaged, I don't recommend having no second HDD.
The HDD can fail at any time now.
It's possible it suddenly will be inaccessible and you will be unable to boot your OS.
BTW, what happened to your HDD.
How did it get damaged?
If it's an IBM DeskStar HDD, then it's high chances why you are
having the problem you are having with it, usually bad sectors
randomly occuring. If you have an IBM DeskStar HDD, go to
IBM .
Also, try to check for any firmware updates available at IBM's
web site. Some IBM DeskStar HDDs require a firmware update
to prevent possible data integrity failures.
Also, there have been a lot of reports of 30 GB and larger IBM
DeskStar HDDs failing often, often with one year, because a lot of them are defective.

Heh, it's odd you did not gues :> Western Digital it is ( Caviar )
What happend to it ?
All was fine .. then this one dark day .. my motherboard went down on me ... so i bot a new one and a new CPU ( from celeron 2 duron ). Then i had to re-install all the stuff ( mainly Windows and Linux ). Windows went right thrue but linux reportet :"partition_table_error" and in the logs :"unalbe to write to disk".
Here is where Partiton Magick comes in. ERROR 80 damaged bla bla bla ...
It looks like the first 50 cylinders ( or whatever ) are damaged , so i'v made my partitions ( 2 ) after the first 50 and it's working fine. But linux still gives me thesame error.
Other odd thing bout my HD is it's incompatibilty ( damn, is this word correc ? ) width my motherboard :>
After every hard reset ( opwer off - power on ) I have to set it back in the BIOS and it usualy takes about 5 minuts till it's properly detected.
And hey - it's been working fine for 3 years, time to get my a nowe one .. but wait ! Scrue the HDD im buyng mysqlf a PS2 : >

I recommend you get a Maxtor HDD.
I never had such problems with my HDDs.
BTW, I did have an old Western Digital Caviar 1 GB HDD
that failed. After the first approximately 240 MB, the HDD could not be read. It would just emit the noise,
"KA-TICK, KA-TICK, KA-TICK". BTW, it also did that always when powering up too. The spindle seemed a tad louder too, compared
to another Western Digital Caviar 1 GB I have with the *same*
capacity that's still good.

Hehe, i dont have a clue how but it works, Windows will instal on any HDD while Linux is a smart one and wont.
Get a new one is easier said than done - dont have any $$ on me.
One thing is funny - it boots normaly on my firends comp ( dont have to wait till it's detected by the bios ) and it makes the funny sound from time to time.
Its like pawer off / power on of the disk but it's still worinkg, only thing i have to do is to backup all my work to FTP's offten :>

Mine's been a really crap christmas so far.
First I've had no sleep due to this f***ing great, bright star shining through the bedroom window,
