It's only a guess, but maybe it's to somehow validate the WHQL signature in the drivers, I don't see actually why they wouldn't want to do that. I can assure you we have no spyware intentions or anything like that, it's pure trust me.

I believe you are right. The internet connecting is probably contacting crl.microsoft.com to check for a digital signature, but can be annoying sometimes.
