In paper mario, when I get to level 3 the game freezes. Then after it freezes if I save state and reload it it gives me a black screen with a few dark gray squares in the background and seemingly random text (but I know that the text isnt actually random) so I took a screenshot and it is only in a corner of the screen in the screenshot and I posted the screenshot here.

That was an odd error. But there are things that u should make sure. Make sure it's a good rom! My sign will tell u how.
U're using the default settings, i hope?
