Does Bow-wow appears in a game before Link's Awakening?

Bow-wow (or chain chomp) appears in Super Mario Bros 3, Yoshi's island, The Legend of Zelda; a link to the past and Super Mario 64. So, yes, it appeared before link's awakening

It was an enemy you couldn't defeat. You just had to try not to touch it. It was something like this:
