My computer keeps freezing

It freezes within a few mins of the computer being turned on but for some reason if I'm in a game it never freezes, only when I'm not in a game is when it freezes, does anyone have an idea on why it might do this?

Probably bad windows installation

If the games dont hang, as u said it's probably a bad windows installation. Happens often if u use win98 or winme.
So reinstall....

Ok I've formatted the HDD and reinstalled windows and its working fine

yeah, get XP, that'yll solve all your probs and speed up your system, dont use that Win9x shit, its buggy as hell, i used to get a blue screen once a week when i had it, with winxp ive had no probs and 1 crash since April and i usually keep my pc on all day aswell
